I experienced exactly the same thing. When ever I press a button to
look it shifts it to Nuetral. Even tried setting a button as clutch
and that didn't work either. I'm assuming that since it sees the
buttons in the shifter as shifting to nuetral and then to whatever
gear the button is assigned it shifts to nuetral but since the button
is not assigned to a gear it just sits there.
Have you seen the sticky wall bug & dover? Didn't try it at
michigan. Was checking out the crash characteristics and went low on
a straight & then straight up into the wall in the corner and it
started to spin off the wall, flipped upside down (looked like the old
'picture on celluloid' animation of the old arcade games where one
view is right side up & the next is upside down) and the RF corner
stuck in the wall & the car stopped there. The wall held the front
end down for awhile and then it seemed to let go and rocked back on
the roof more. FF kept the wheel turned far left though. Wall was
apparently still affecting the wheel's.

Apparently there is something wrong with the shifter code for H-Plate
that will not allow any other button to be pressed while the car is in
gear. Looking left or right will not work. Hope they fix this!
