I used to have a cable modem before I got ADSL. I could download a 20MB file in 50 seconds. Would that be about 1.4GB in an hour? --David Cook "Simon Brown" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:%PeV5.1216$[email hidden]...

yeah, check out speedguide.net or..for an interesting bandwidth test--http://www.computingcentral.com/topics/bandwidth/ the fastest i ever got at the bandwidth site was 1.2 MB/sec..in the middle of the night on a wednesday...slowest was 65K/sec That is the up and downside of cable, if other people in your loop are on and doing bandwidth intensive things, your speed drops. I usually average 250K/sec when not limited by server speed. I hava a very solid isp and am in the usa, which may be different than the uk...or other places in the us for that matter;) dunk In article <%PeV5.1216$[email hidden]>, "Simon Brown" <[email hidden]> wrote:

I'm DL'ing right now from 3dfiles at 124 KB/sec over a cable modem. This is a bit off the 250 KB/sec I'd normally expect, but hardly "dead". In article <[email hidden]>, [email hidden] says...

When you say 250 KB/sec, is that just a normal cable modem? Are they all that fast? Does that mean you can sometimes d/l about 800 MB in one hour? That's pretty amazing, I didn't know they were so fast. "Howard Roark" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > I'm DL'ing right now from 3dfiles at 124 KB/sec over a cable modem. All cable isn't that fast. It depends on the site your downloading from but I typically get 50-100Kb/s download with an upload of 20-60Kb/s with @Home Canada. It spikes up to 300+Kb/s but I think that only happens when the proxy has it cached :-D Jason. Simon Brown wrote:

Fastest I've experienced is 478kbyte/sec. With increased internet use, speeds have dropped off somewhat, but I'm still pretty pleased, especially since it's flat fee. So if something is slow I start it before going to work and just leave it running.... it'll get there in the end I always say. ;-) Jan. =--- Simon Brown wrote... > When you say 250 KB/sec, is that just a normal cable modem? > Are they all that fast? About 50 min @ 30-32 k/sec on my DSL. Thank God that I don't have to try it with 54k! Todd Walker wrote: > http://www.3dfiles.com > > It links to Walnut Creek and to Telepac.pt for download. Thanks for the info guys, cable modem gets launched here (doncaster, england) sometime in the next four weeks, and I don't think I'll be able to resist getting it. Even at 33 per month :) "Jason Monds" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

That site is cool but also very incorrect. I've gone there and it's told me speeds that are absolutely impossible for me to get (3-4 MB/sec when the max I can get is 2 MB/sec). I wouldn't rely on anything it says. Mike Horton <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:903vs8$n49$[email hidden]...

It took me a tad over an hour for 1.3GB of data. :-) -- Chuck Kandler Linux, because life's too short for a buggy OS. Registered Linux User #180746 http://counter.li.org
