Have no wheel and hate my achy breaky joystick. GPL appears to force
me to have to use joystick buttons for throttle and brake ..... is
there any simple way round this so that I can use keyboard keys of my
choice for everything.

Keyboard? Baahhhh! Set aside some money and buy a force feedback wheel. Your
social life will be ruined, but you'll get huge amounts of fun.
A FF wheel may be expencive, but if you love GPL it's worth it.
Buy a proper FF wheel. You wont regret it (but your wife will).
