which steering wheels are using optical encoders for steering wheel
(not pedal) movement/control? I was thinking of trying this
experiment.... gut this type of wheel, attach the encoder to a home-
made wheel and steering shaft (built utilizing sturdy ball bearing
construct) and use the same wheel electronics & software.
(....impatiently awaiting sim-addicts optical USB controller.....)

Maybe the Microsoft Precision Pro wheel is optical. I know their
Precision Pro stick is anyway.

My MSFF is optical, seems the way to go, although you will need some
pretty well engineered gear systems for it to work reliably and
accurately with high resolution.
