I can vouch for this. I've been using GC2.0 for a few weeks now and
it's amazing how fast and sharp the voice recognition is. The little
pause between giving a command and GC1.0 recognizing it used to mean I
wouldn't use it in action games. But GC2.0 is plenty fast for that.
I've been using it in Sacrifice, which is very fast paced, and v2.0
has no problem keeping up.

Game Commander 2.0 voice software and onboard sound problems
A poster flagged the release of Game Commander 2.0 voice-command software, and users praised its faster recognition. One user could not get it, or the NASCAR 4 demo's sound, working with onboard motherboard audio. Others and Game Commander Support explained that cheap onboard chips often lack proper full-duplex support and recommended a dedicated card such as an SB Live.

Colinman,
This is definitely a problem with your microphone setup. Check your
setup to make sure you don't have it boosted, which is usually the
default. I have my recording level down *way* low for GC2.0, partly
to make sure it doesn't pick up commands from the game or music I'm
listening to or whatever.
Also, be careful about programing orders that sound alike and try to
stay clear of sharp one syllable commands (such as "go"). Once I got
my mic set up properly, I've found GC2.0 to be very good at
discriminating specific commands.

Disable that onboard soundcard and buy a SB Live! Value. They are
pretty cheap.
After reading all the followups to your situation, here's a summary from our
experience:
1. On-board sound is usually low cost. Even if it supports full duplex audio,
it may not be the highest quality. As someone posted, it's good enough for
general use, but we're talking about serious stuff here.
2. Older sound cards can also be a problem because they can be noisy during
full duplex operation or not support true full duplex. We've had many
customers get vastly improved recognition by upgrading to a Live! card. Note:
The Aureal-based cards are good too but, alas, they're gone.
3. I don't know of any on-board sound solutions that are dependent on the CPU
but I'm sure there are some. Nevertheless, #1 and #2 are the most compelling
reasons to use a quality board.
Hope that helps.

Because your onboard sound "probably" can't do full duplex. That is
whats needed for most voice comm programs to work. AND....if the sound is
like
soft modems, you are needlessly wasting cpu cycles to run that onboard pos.
Sure it works fine, for most things, but it's obviously NOT doing a complete
job. For years I have made it a strong rule to avoid ANY MB with
Onboard sound and/or video. It may be cheaper, but it's stealing from your
system's overall horsepower.

far. I avoid on-board video because it's usually useless at best, but
not being a sound afficionado, I never considered this aspect. I was
under the impression that the sound was a built-in chipset, and,
therefore, wouldn't load the CPU any worse than any PCI sound card, but
that may be a misconception on my part. I'm 99% sure that my
motherboard supports full-duplex sound -- my board is a new top-o-the-
line MSI K7T Pro2 Socket A board, but I'll double-check on the half-
duplex/full-duplex issue.
Thanks for giving me some food for thought -- it's the best argument
I've heard yet.

The N4 demo is a pre-alpha demo. It will be fixed in the retail

It doesn't work "just fine" if Game Commander won't work with it. It
is very well known that onboard soundcards are crap, and you are better
off disabling it and getting a real soundcard like the SB Live!

Oh you are having problems with Nascar4??? Haha. I'm affraid you
need a *REAL* Soundblaster to ensure no problems for you total
gaming experience :-)

What kind of soundcard is it? Will it do duplex? Will it do duplex well?
I had a SBPCI64 (Ensoniq AudioPCI) which worked fine with everything
also. But Game Commander would have slight pauses. Between
switching to a SB Live! (I wasn't too proud or stubborn to try something
reasonable), and upgrading to GC 2.0 everything is now instantanious.
So you can try to convince yourself that you don't need the SB Live! if
you want. But some of us know better :-)

On board soundcard are the same for the serious gamer. For the
casual non gaming computer user, on board soundcards are just
fine.
Just wait until you read mine :-)

Anyone whos interested, I got an Aureal Vortex 2 card (OEM with digital
input) from multiwave (www.mwave.com) when getting parts for a computer I'm
making for my in-laws for $29 bucks!!! I know what people will say, driver
support in the future may be non-existant, but I have no problems with the
current drivers in anything I play. Man, I'm pissed Aureal went under,
they were SO MUCH BETTER than creative at 3d sound. (did creative ever come
up with a decent 3d sound???)
