Should F1 2000 owners get a discount on Championship Season?
Posters debated whether EA's F1 Championship Season 2000 was a fair new product or a paid patch for F1 2000 buyers. John Bodin argued it added a lot, including the driving school, weather and better framerates, while others wanted a loyalty discount and worried about publishers re-releasing unfinished games. Some compared it to Papyrus's expansion packs, and there was speculation about EA's next F1 title and Infogrames buying Hasbro Interactive.
Automated summary.
What happens to the poor people that bought F12k now that a patched
version of the same season has come out? Are they just saying screw you,
buy the new one or are they excepting returns at little or no charge for
the new one? Sorry if this was already brought up and i missed it.
F1CS2K is FAR more than a simple "patch," Shaun -- the Driving School
mode alone makes it worth the purchase. Then there's the added
weather effects, which definitely constitutes more than a mere "patch"
to F1 2000. And the improved frame rates. And the enhanced vehicle
dynamics. And the updated tracks. And the updated track graphics.
It may seem like a bitter pill to swallow, but F1CS2K is a worthwhile
purchase even if you already own F1 2000. I don't htink there's any
way you could patch F1 2000 enough to get it up to the same level as
F1CS2K.

Kinda like N3/N Legends/Nascar Trucks Expansion Pack /NASCAR Acceleration
Pack.
It sucks to have bought the first 3 then the last 2 come out and
rip you off. Looks like EA Sports took a page from Papy's book...

F1CD2K is the game we should have got in the first place. EA could
have gone a long way to making customers feel good by offering a
discount to current owners. Microsoft do that with both their FS and
CFS seies.

me.... Game makers rush their product to market in time for Christmas
or whatever, often full of bugs and/or incomplete, then....
Rather than patching it properly, they re-release the product as a "2001"
version!!! So if you want weather effects, or in-car cameras, or
whatever that should have been included in the initial release you have
to buy it again!
Edios is notorious for this with their Tomb Raider and Thief series,
coming out with a "Gold" version a few months to a year later, which
is just the original game with a few extra levels, and/or support for
3D sound, or some new wizbang graphics card. They usually they offer a small
refund however, like $10 off if you were a sucker enough to buy the first
game when it
initially came out and still have your proof of purchase, so that takes
some of the sting out, but now were seeing EA's F1-2001 CS and Ford Racing
2001, and we've all heard there will be a GP4 around the corner with a lot
of the elements we expected to see in GP3 but didn't get (hopefully they'll
include Indianapolis!), I've also seen/heard that EA is releasing a Nascar
2001 game too!
Let's hope this doesn't become the rule rather than the exception!

Personally I prefer the ongoing development approach. It has to be funded
somehow and it means we get regular updates, rather than waiting years and
years. Plus the immediate problems are more likely to get fixed in the short
term.
I was quite happy to buy the Indycar and Nacsar expansion packs. This way I
got the game early (as I viewed it) and the other tracks were made available
when they were complete. Plus each expansion pack provided some new
features.
If GPL had been released without the Nurburgring, would we have argued at
the value of purchasing an expansion track pack, bearing in mind the amount
of work involved in that one track.
For sure I would have welcomed add on tracks and car packs.
How many times have we bought shiny new titles to get a fix of something
new, only to consign them to the shelves to return to the trusty favourites.
Each release doesn't have to be a whole new programming exercise from
scratch. I would rather have regular updates.
Cheers

Same as the "poor people" who bought F1RS and wondered why they didn't much
support until MGPRS2 was released not even a year after.
Bah, don't buy F1CS, get a copy of MBTR ;-)

It will become the rule. And I don't have a problem with that because
I like to see good games get improved. I just think they should offer
a discount to long time supporters. Follow the Microsoft lead.

Then again, with Hasbro under their wing, maybe they'd begin to focus a
bit more on sims -- Hasbro seems to have abandoned this area, so maybe
the shift to Infogrames would be a good one.

No problem, I just went "Hey.... haven't I read this somewhere?". It's
quite normal for people to bring back opinions if they feel they haven't
been heard or taking in context correctly, but they should be reformulated.
If it didn't do anything the first time, you need to change it. I know that
for a fact <g> :)

Lesson learned....
It's just that I'd gladly buy F1CS2K if they offered a rebate but as is...
I'll probably wait a few months until the price drops to the $20 level or
ask for it for Christmas and let someone else cover the tab ;-)

Thanks to John Bodin's heads up, I just ordered F1cs2k.5 from EA for
$19 plus shipping. Pepsi has yellow capped bottles that can add up to
a $20 savings coupon. Of course if you don't like pepsi....

Does anyone know what plans EA might have for the 2001 season? Since I
already have F12K, I'd hate to pick up F12KCS only to find that F1 2001 is
to be released next March or something.
Good gawd, how would I know? I can't even get anybody at EA to return
my e-mails, let alone send me money!

I'd say that F1CS2K has the longevity at this point to make it a

I think F1 2001 is slated for release towards the middle or end of the
2001 F1 season (not sure of the exact timeframe). The good news is
that it should be a new, ground-up sim, and not an evolution of the
