Hi folks,
As some of you may know, i made my own wheel / pedals (doing mechanical
engineering for study helps :) and now i'm going to make a H pattern
shifter. I already got some help from various people.. The only part i need
a supplier of is a few spring loaded ball detents:

but sadly i'm yet not capable of finding suppliers! can anybody say more
about these things?
Thx,
Niels

Yep McMaster-Carr will have what you need. So will any place that supplies
parts to the mold making industry. They come in various sizes and strengths.
What I want to know is how are you hooking that up? The standard joystick
port only has so many buttons. Could you possible email me about how you are
getting around that? I want to install a shifter on my pod too. Somehow, a
paddle shifter and a clutch just don't seem right. I keep reaching over for
the shifter that isn't there. <g> I will try and remember to bring home
the phone number for McMaster-Carr. You can likely find them online. They
have almost everything you could want and the service is the best of anyone
I deal with. I don't know how they deal with individuals as I have always
ordered from them as a company. I doubt it is a problem.

about the way its gonna be connected to the pc.. well, lets say it is
possible both fully electronically and via a DirectX driver..
more news when the design stuff is finished

This is an easy one. Check out a website for McMaster Carr, order a copy of
their very thick catalog, or if you can contact them and order over the phone,
it may be easier for such a small item. In fact, they may have a lot of things
in their catalog that you could possibly use for your design to avoid having to
machine parts.
Another one. Contact "One-Way Industrial Supply" 302 Pine Avenue, Goleta,
California (805) 964-7749. I am absolutely sure that they have spring and
ball plungers of different sizes, threads and tip material, perhaps even with
nuts. I recommend you get their catalog as well.
Good luck.

How are you going to do the shifting? Are their going to be buttons
where the shifting points are? I was just playing around with ideas for a
plan one night and decided that I would have shift up be on the bottom for
G2, right top for G3, bottom for G4, top right for G5 and bottom for G6.
Then for downshifting I would have top for G5, left bottom for G4, top for
G3, left bottom for G2, and top for G1. All the down buttons would be
connected together, and all the up buttons would be connected too. There
would be tracks under the pattern so that the shifter would not accidently
down shift or upshift. The only problems that I have is that I did not have
a way to connect the bottom of the shifter to the shaft, and I wanted to
connect the shift buttons to a circuit board, so that if I went from 2nd to
4th, it would hit the button twice. I finally just decided that I was doing
fine with the padells on my Logitech so I abandened it like my other
projects (Lotus 49 chasis and NASCAR chasis) but this idea seems good and it
might get me off my duff.
