Breaking zero on GPLRank and GPL addiction
Marko Aaltonen described finally beating the Papyrus 0.00 benchmark on GPLRank after five months. Others congratulated him and joked about GPL taking over their social lives. They traded advice on improving at the Nurburgring, Rouen and Mosport, including using GPLReplayAnalyser to compare laps.

I somehow think you have missed the most important point in alle this
RankRage.... people who actually have a social life are doomed to remain on
the positive side of 0.00.
Be happy that you have yet to let this "game" take over your life
completely.... we (the subzero's) are not to be envied, as we have dedicated
most of our waking hours to turning a small wheel in front of a computer
monitor ;)
Next time i see you in VROC, i'll join your server and we can settle things
on the track. (Not Rouen)
See you...
Mikkel
Well said :o)
I for my part have a social life and am in the mid twenties struggling that
down as hard as I can.
My wife for sure shakes her head each time there is roumor in the homeofice
and she has to pop up the TV volume :o)
Anyway I never have heard about a game (sorry : SIM) that keeps alive for
over TWO YEARS !!!!
And I never heard about one that threatens with such strong addiction as
does GPL. For hours, days, months and years !
Lets rock at vroc and enable our wives to have some sparetime of their own
:o) Loving
husbands, aren't we ?

Congrats... just beat the magic 0.00 two days ago after 5-6 months of
driving. Damn that felt good ;)
I'm right behind you at -0.44, looking to break the -5 barrier as soon as my
new computer arrives in a couple of days.
Looking forward to scramble madly downwards to the places currently held by
Mr. Huttu and the rest of the -infinite guys... NOT ;)
Mikkel
Well, I finally made it, after 5 odd months, I broke the elusive Papyrus
0.00 benchmark time for the eleven tracks. As of 4.12.2000 my GPLRanking
is -0.71.
How it came to be:
I got the game when it first came out and with my trusty old Voodoo 2 the
game ran quite nicely on a Celery oc@450. Yet I had no patience to drive
even one clean lap. Spin after spin after spin, how can a game be so
frustrating? But even so, it was fun just to put pedal to the metal while
the Ferrari's engine screamed for help, beatifull sound the original one,
still in use btw. Then as I upgraded my system I sold the voodoo and the
TNT1 was left on the system. Couldn't play the game anymore, only software
and that was undriveable, time went on and the OpengGL patch came, was
thrilled to try it again but did not know how to make it work well in OpenGL
so the game was left to dust on the shelves.
Another system upgrade and know, a brand spanking new GeForce DDR, some
tweaks and the OpenGL mode at 640x480 and 2xFSAA the game was playable, not
good but playable. And again, some time went on...
Then the light shone to my dark PC when Papy released the D3D rasterizer.
Oooh, 1600x1200 resolution with 2xFSAA, yes quite playable! Now it was the
time to start finding those missing seconds and completed laps without
outings to the fenceline...also had to buy a new FF wheel, my choice was the
Guillemot Ferrari wheel, a good buy.
At first I began driving Watkins Glen on third gear only and the goal was
just to stay on track and learn it. It was difficult to restrain oneself not
to drive like you drive with those arcade racers (Colin McRae had a perhaps
bad influence :) ). I had to learn to brake well before the corner to leak
some speed off, not easy when you are just a beginner, but I was proud of
myself when I got the Glen's times down to 1.16 minutes, but also wondering
how in the hell the fastest times were over ten seconds faster, I surely
didn't know how I could drive any faster. It seemed to me that I was doing
everything possible, I accelerated to the max, I braked as hard as I could
and still the times weren't getting any better, aarrgghhh! The problem was
that I braked too late, drifted wide and couldn't get on the gas quick
enough, my lines were bad and so on.
At Glen my PB is still at the slower side of things 1.06.21 but I'm quite
happy with it. To get a negative ranking, a series of learning cycles went
by. Learnt to brake better, started to pay more attention to lines, more
restraint with the gas pedal and so on. My first ranking when I got thru
driving all the tracks was somewhere over 120 and and wondering if I had the
patience to concentrate to practice more. I mostly drove around 3-30 laps
per day, depending on the track. With that amount of driving the most
advances were at the latter stages. At the end of september I had a ranking
of 45 and just three weeks ago it was 30 and I was stuck at 8.40 at the
Ring. But things started to get together and was able to pull off 8.26, what
a joy! But hardest track for me was Spa. Few corners and if you messed one
you messed the whole lap, hate the track still, though there is some light
at the end of the tunnel, when you learn the lines and turn in earlier at
the fast corners you'll do fine, maybe I'll try it more but 8.21.xx is
enough at the moment.
I would like to thank Greger for his setups, I only added some fuel to do my
hotlapping as I not a very consistant driver, this way I dont need to
Shift-R after every second lap. No Internet connection from home so no
online racing, what a shame. Setups made the game for me at the latter
stages, especilally Greger's Kyalami track with the Eagle, I finally found
the way of controlling the car with gas and brake, fun.
Now I'm officially hooked, love the game, hopefully I'll continue to love it
more.
Thanks for reading,
Marko Aaltonen

Congratulations! Enjoy the feeling while you can, since -if
you're anything like me- you'll be itching to crack the -5, -10, -20
barriers soon enough!

Long Live Nigel Mansell!
Well then, I would better start practising the ol' mighty 'Ring. You've got
me on that track, congrats!
I'll checking your progress as I added you to my buddy list.

Ok Eldred, you gotta stop improving at the 'Ring like that. Please switch to
Starcraft or whatever. <g>
It's the only place where I've got a number of seconds on you. At this rate,
I'm going to be back in St. Eldred's Cup real soon. I wish I knew how you
get around Mosport so fast. Sigh, my home track and I suck at it...
BTW, despite my suggestion to you a while ago about using the automatic
shifting, I've gone the other way and tried manual shifting. I think it's
helped lower some of my times, although I've had some amusing incidents -
such as quickly ripping down through the gears for the hairpin at Spa, only
to end up in reverse. Oops, too many clicks. Where's that damn lockout???

Life is overrated :P
What I would like to know is if there are any positive-rank drivers in
VROC servers. I'm pretty satisfied with my progress and lap records in
most tracks, but every time I race online most of the people run 1-2
seconds faster and I feel like a moving roadblock. Sigh.

Heh, Rouen is one of the "where the hell is that second?" tracks. I can
do 2:00-2:01 laps with no problems, but pushing it below 2:00 is rare.
Same thing with Monza and 1:30. Someone tell me where the hidden speed

GP3. Still can't get the twisty section of InterLagos right, despite
having first raced there in GP1 way back when. If it's not too much
wing it's too little, or too much brake or not enough. Sometimes I run
through there perfectly - never twice in a row though. Still not
relaxed.
I decide to get away from the computer and think a run to the store is

picking the best line through turns and roundabouts, changing gears
like i'm playing GPL. The "section" by the lagoon (on the way to the

I buy some snacks and "race" back home - it's time to work on my lap
at the Glen, after of course taking the Lagoon Section from the even
more exhilirating south end back home (you could conceivebly put it in
the water this way. The other side of the road is just a park).
Eventually the Glen pisses me off too, and it's bed time. Chances are
i'll lie awake a while wondering where to shake that second or two, or
revising my tyre strategy for Rockingham, or pondering the setup that
will see me nail InterLagos consistently and not be a championship
also-ran by round 2.
I can tell you, I am not relaxed. These games... they've taken over.
And I love it.

Have you tried using GPLReplayAnalyser to compare those laps ?
Granted, at the 'Ring, it's not a fun task, but if you really want
to know where you're making/losing time, it's the only way to go.
That and maybe GPLSpyGirl (allowing you to merge two replays and
watch the result in GPL).

In my experience, there are 3 critical turns at Rouen (in order you
see them on the track, not necessarily of importance):
1. The first turn. You must carry as much speed as possible
through here.
2. Beauval (a.k.a. the sharpish right before that looooooooong
straight with the kink in it). With such a stretch of high
speed road ahead, exit from this corner is critical.
3. Paradis (a.k.a. the last turn). This can be taken much faster
then you think, if you turn in earlier than you think you
should :-) Again, there's a fairly long straight after, so
carrying speed and getting a fast exit is crucial.
These three turns also have someting else in common: you cannot get
through them really fast if you're "off-throttle" going through.
You absolutely must be on the gas (just slightly), otherwise the
back end of the car will kinda "drag you off" the line. Once you
turn-in for these, you should be giving just enough throttle to keep
a constant speed (accelerating at the apex, of course).
Hope this helps,
Richard.

people's. If you're like me, I never do a lap the same way twice, but if I were to
piece together my fastest section times from different laps I'd have some
reasonably quick laps (for me anyway). So compare those two Ring laps and to see
where you were faster and then play the replays to see what you did differently in
those sections (i.e. line, braking points, when and how you picked up the
throttle, etc.). Then hopefully you can put together a single lap containing your
"fastest sections" , (I know, its easier said than done ;)).
This works for the shorter tracks as well. ;)

PS While searching dejanews for some gpl setting info, I ran across a post of
yours from 1999 saying that you couldn't break 1:30 at Monza or 10 minutes at the
Ring in a lifetime. Hmmm.... so you've been reborn/reincarnated twice since 1999?

Christmas vacation...
I want a recount! <g>
I honestly said that? I can see saying it about Monza, because I couldn't
IMAGINE going under 1:30(only did it very recently). But my problems getting
under 10 minutes at the Ring were due to constant lawnmowing and bumper cars...
I can, however, state that I don't think I'll ever get under 8 minutes at the
Ring. I see my probable limit as somewhere between 8:20 and 8:30, but I don't
know how I'm gonna GET there yet... :)

Hmmm.... so you've been reborn/reincarnated twice since >1999? >:-)Hi Eldred - Well, your Mosport time is FAST compared to mine! For some
reason I have real troubles at that track. And my Kyalami time is
(relatively speaking) even worse. (1:23.65) I get verrrry frustrated in
South Africa...
I'd be glad to send you my GP3 to distract you, but it's going to a friend
next week for him to try. He's another one who's started to come down with
the GPL bug, although for some reason he insists on putting aside time for
his family. What's that all about???
My recent distractions have been more in the 'action' category (Elite Force,
Crimson Skies, No One Lives Forever) rather than your 'strategy' titles - it
keeps those twitch reflexes tuned so I can catch the power-on oversteer. <g>
