After reading the interview I was disappointed to see that WSC has
been delayed again, and is now scheduled for release sometime in the 3rd
quarter of 2001. However, the good news is that the West brothers are
working on a demo. Lets hope that it is released before springtime.

Lots of good information. Apologies if it's already been posted here, but
I've seen no mention of it on this newsgroup.

If the sim isn't scheduled for release until 3rd qtr 2001, then I would
think that means it is nowhere near complete. Thus, I wouldn't expect
a demo for several months. I don't know what good it would do them to
release a demo with code that was so far from production code...
Oh well, it'll give me more time to upgrade my pc and hopefully enjoy
N4.

Given that they do this with 2 people (?) I don't think 3rd qtr 2001
will be made. Rather like 2nd quarter 2002. Although the physics seem
to be done, so that leaves a lot of track tinkering. Which is a LOT.
Not that it won't be worth waiting for. They should just not give a
date.

Well, when they put this project to public knowledge about a year ago
or something, it was planned for release about now. I really do not
hope that they have to delay it for another year, because I want this
game. Of course, I don't want it that much that they should not use
the time to get it finished in style.
I don't think they will release a demo as such, more like a quake3
like test.

Oh...no doubt that demand has now spurred Chris and his brother on to
greater heights and they'll be foregoing Christmas celebrations just to keep
working for you, Olav.

LOL! When I look at what I just typed, it seems like it is easy to
misintrepet (sp?) the whole thing. I was of course meaning another
year from Q3 2001 to somewhere in 2002.

That's what I mean :)

Well, they did say the physics are quite done, so that makes for a
very good demo showing off only 1 car, 1 track, which can be done
quite nicely. Tracks take a long time, cars are not too easy, and
things like the interface around the game can also take up quite some
time (if you want something like the NFS titles).

Good enough for me. ;-)

Although I am looking forward to this title just like the rest of us,
I'm not going to get too excited about it. Past experience tells me
that titles that continually have their release date delayed (I'm
talking many months/years here... not just a couple of months)
generally fail to meet expectations when finally released. Part of the
problem is that pc hardware changes/improves at such a rapid pace. It
is difficult to design a game today that will take advantage of pc
hardware 2 or 3 years from now. Generally, I think when a software
title is delayed by more than a few months its because the initial
design was flawed or there are not enough resources (people and $$$)
dedicated to the project. I bet we can all think of a title or three
that was released after years of development - and we said "Nice game
but seems dated... would have looked great a year or 2 ago..." For
me, GP# falls into that category. I hope WSC doesn't, but I'm not
holding my breath.

That *has* seemed odd to me, just 2 people working on it. Must be more
in the background, because going to all the tracks and doing pictures
on it, then recreating them, seems like work you could and should
spread over different people.

The idea behind WSC is good. It's open. That alone will have a lot
going for it. Well, don't listen to me, I'm doing the same thing, but
with 1 person (for now), not in work hours (hm, well most often) and
with little to drive except the lack of something just like WSC.
But anyway, creating my own sim is a large endless pool of new
information, and most of which I like to learn (OpenGL optimizations,
BSP trees, collision detection etc etc).
The point is aiming for the biggest you can think of, so leaving
things open without the pressure of releasing before X-mas. I'm still
enjoying doing it.
In other words, WSC will still be interesting in 2 years, and because
of the openness it might survive a long time just like Doom did in a
similar manner.
