the Playstation version on the shelves...

Colin McRae Rally 2 PC release and impressions
Jay J announced that Colin McRae Rally 2.0 was coming to PC on 8 December 2000. Early players confirmed a cockpit view and praised the handling and force feedback, while Andre Warringa found it too arcade-like compared with Rally Championship 2000. Several users reported lockups on Voodoo3 cards.
Automated summary.
Just got the game in the UK the manual lists an in-car view, I'll confirm
this when I've installed it.

It also says that the interiors are as accurate as the exteriors so it

They gave it 89% BTW.

I am referring to CMR2. It has a cockpit view.
FPS was pretty lousy on my PIII500 V3 3000 by the way, in 800x600
resolution. All details were set to high, but to me it seems like a
bad PS port when I compare it to the smooth fps of F1CS2000, in 1024
res with 21 cars on the field.
Graphical RC2000 looks much better while RC2000 even has a much
smoother framerate compared to CMR2.

Check out RC2000 for photorealism :))
It supports 3 axis, but unfortunately not 2 devices, so I can't use my
CH pedals :(

RC2000 but anyway. Codemasters has (in my oppinion) yet again merged arcade
fun with simulation longevity to a beatyfull cocktail. The sensation of
speed is phenomenal.

I got CMR2 for the PC in a shop in town (Cheltenham, UK) yesterday - I have
had it on the Playstation since it came out - great gameplay, shit graphics.
So the wait has been long. Worse still, I also saw the (PC based) Ford
simulator version at the International Autosport show in January and played
on it 3 months ago when the Ford Rally tour thing came to town.
First off, I have to say I think it is the best rally game you can get,
having played (in my current order of preference) Rally Masters, RC2000,
Ubisoft 2001 (demo), VRally 2
IMO, for all of RC2000's graphical retentiveness it still plays like a brick
even with the latest patch. It may be 100% accurate in pure physics terms
for all I know but it is just doesn't feel, or even look, right especially
when the cars lose contact with the ground.
I just find CMR2 is so much more satisfying....
apart from it's locking up - after about 5 secs on any stage, in any car,
all camera angles, arcade and rally mode - on my p3-450, 128 Mb RAM,
Windows ME, Directx8, Voodoo 3 3000 (latest drivers 1.07.00). The game just
freezes and the only way out is the reset button
I know those specs don't quite make the recommended but I've also tested it
on a p2-350, 256 Mb RAM, Windows 98SE, ATI Rage Pro at work and it is fine.
We've even been playing LAN games. Obviously it doesn't look as good, but it
does run
I suspect it's Directx8 that's the problem although I've been playing lots
of games recently on my current setup - Rally Masters, RC2000, GTA, ST
Voyager Elite Force, NFSP2000
I would appreciate any ideas or confirmation from someone who is running on
similar hardware.
cheers

Well i know that RC2000 is very popular. Maybe its GPL that has ruined
racing for me. If it powerslides, I like it. Nothing beats going sideways
through corners. The ability to feel the surface in your wheel greatly adds
imersion to the game. You can actually feel when you are leaving the road
and are riding on the shoulder of it instead. Great fun.

waited a bit with installing those drivers... If it ain't broken don't
fix it :)

This evening I played with the options, set the 'draw ahead' to 3 and
the fps got lots better. Still I think that the graphics are nothing
spectaculair.
