What are your system specs, and what is your "SystemRating" parameter
set to in the game's config.ini file? My guess is you're playing with
a rating of "1" or "2" from the sound of things (blurry graphics, etc.).

The tire sounds in F1CS2K take the place of the lateral cockpit
movement in GP3. I do understand what you're talking about, because,
similarly, I can't properly gauge my braking in GP3, in fact, without
the fore/aft cockpit movement that's present in F1CS2K (and GPL, and
ICR2, and NASCAR Heat, and . . .)
Otherwise, with your graphics problems and such, I'd say you're playing

F1CS2000 demo graphics criticised and defended
Stephen Ferguson found the F1 Championship Season 2000 demo unimpressive visually, and John Bodin traced this to a low SystemRating setting in config.ini. Ferguson still felt it used hardware poorly compared with GP3. The discussion compared AI and handling with GP3 and GPL, and Gregor Veble explained that tyre cornering stiffness, not grip, caused the icy feel.

Was it my support of GP3 which is not correct? Or was it the use of the
generally unacceptable phrase "Spirit of Speed". No, I guess it was
probably the "pixellated little-person" comment. I can only try to excuse
myself by noting that I wrote the message on the train at 6:30 am, I have
recently seen Austin Powers 2 yet again, and old habits die hard in language

Aha. Bingo. It's a "3". I manually edited the value in the .ini file just
to see what the program is capable of, and there is certainly more there for
people with monster systems (sheepish grin). However, the visual
performance of almost every other racing game I have thrown at my humble
little notebook has put F1CS to shame (Superbike, NFS:PU, GPL, N4, RC2000,
GP3, even SCGT running F12000 tracks).

GP3 gives you cockpit motion under braking.

Really? Am I doing something wrong -- I'm using hardware mode, but all
I see is lateral (left/right) motion in the corners. Then again, I
haven't played it in weeks, so I'll have to fire it up again to check.
FWIW, I'm still undecided on Lankhor's 3D cockpit implementation. The
lateral/longitudinal motions are nice enough (the longitudinal feels
more like a "dive" under braking, though -- too much downward motion
for my taste). The head panning thing, though, gives me fits. I like
the "organic" feel of it in replays, for example, but in practice it
REALLY messes up my sense of turn-in, and I find it hard to gauge how
much steering input is needed, how much steering input I've dialed-in,
or when it's time to start unwinding the wheel. I know that several
other folks around these parts like this feature, but I wonder if
anybody else has the same problems I have with it?

A PIII-500 should have plenty of grunt for F1CS2000, but the graphics
card is probably your bottleneck.

Well that's wonderful if you have more horsepower, but it pales in

everyone has killer systems, so I'll pass on this one.

Nothing to watch out for. Everyone has an opinion.
Perhaps someone can explain this one to me. I managed to nose into a tire
barrier (hey, we all make mistakes). I popped the car into R and went
nowhere. I put it into neutral, revved it up, dropped it into reverse, and
went about 1 foot backwards then stopped. I repeated this ad nauseum until
once I stepped on the brake by accident while in reverse gear. The car
drove normally. Whoa. Weird. I went to the config screens to see if I had
something strange set with auto-recovery, or auto-reverse, or perhaps
"please switch my gas and brake pedal if I put it into reverse", but found
nothing. Does this happen for everyone?
I like the look left, look right feature. Oh, and Eddie Irvine's eyes have
a knowing Irish wink. Shame about the disappearing suspension arms in some
views. It feels a bit odd driving with those spacy magnetically suspended
wheels. Then again, it's no worse than the disappearing Monaco guardrails
in GP3.
Oh, and I like the fat guy in the crowd with the mustard stain on his
Ferrari stain. It seems they have region-specific spectators...

Just thing where we'd be today if everyone had taken this approach when
GP2 and ICR2 hit the streets -- we'd all still be playing "Revs," and
wondering why nothing better had come along yet . . .
Scale back the graphics until you can afford the hardware if you have
to, but we remember that if you don't support those developers and
publishers who bring us good stuff, racing sims will ultimately end up
in the same sort of slump that flight sims are experiencing.

I've got a system spec of 5 (PIII 800 GeForce 2 GTS) and have to agree whole
heartedly with the original port although my framerates were fine at all
times.
After all the hype I'd seen from the net (including your brief review at
bhm) I was keen to get the demo. I hadn't raced F12K but had a great time
with SCGT (esp bathurst).
Anyway, I was completely underwhelmed by the experience for all the reasons
mentioned in the original post. Each to their own I guess, but for me, its
not very impressive and certainly doesn't make me feel like I'm racing
around in a modern day F1.
I loved Nascar Heat, GPL, SCGT all immediately. I 'liked' GP3 but had my
share of disspointments just like everyone else. But this demo has CONVINCED
me not to bother with this title.
BTW can anyone do a 180 spin and then blast off down the stright, cos I sure
as hell can't. It always overspins. Whatever the logistics of this are, they
are completely alien to any other racing sim I've ever encountered.

I created a little fansite for F12000 before I had the full version,
and after getting the full version I dumped the site because of all the
shortcomings. It hasnt been all that long since then and already we
have this new one, F1CS, and it wont be but till summer till they do a
major rework with F1 2001. I'm back in the fansite business with F1CS
but I see it (this time) as a stepping stone to F1 2001. These days I
dont see individual titles as being so starkly 'by themselves', not
with all the third party suff that is going on (especially with ISI
games). I actually agree with a few things in the first post too. But I
just dont want to keep waiting for perfection all the time.
Besides, its takes a system costing about $1500 to get the *full*
pleasure out of games these days. How harsh are you going to be towards
a $35 piece of software?? :)

This is the only part I can really disagree with. You do know the AI
in F1CS is adjustable, right? The AI in GP3 is about as dumb as it
comes. AI cars in GP3 make no attempt to avoid a collision and will
rear end you *often*, even in the pits. I find the AI improvements in
F1CS much better. Maybe they aren't as aggressive, but at least they
try to avoid a collision. In a computer game this is important to me
becaue we don't have the SA to help us avoid collisions as we would in
RL.

Ok, this post I can use - thanks. Although I'm surprized that the FPS got
*better*. I'd think with the graphics upgrades that come with time would bog
down more than the previous sim. I'll have to fire up F12K again to see how I
liked the actual driving. I don't think I was very good at it... :(

Download the F1CS2K demo and see how much better it performs than F1
2000, Eldred -- the difference was definitely noticeable on both my K6-
2 500 system and my Duron 750 sytems.
As an added bonus, it seems that you can add in all the tracks from F1
2000 into the demo version of F1CS2K, which, in effect, sort of gives
you the "full version" of F1CS2K, complete with the improved frame
rates offered by F1CS2K. I heard of this through the following post on
the High Gear forums; I haven't tried it myself, but it sounds like it
is do-able:
http://forums.simracingnews.com/ubb/Forum13/HTML/002195.html
This method obviously won't give you the improved Spa and Monza tracks
that come with the full version of F1CS2K, nor will it give you the
full F1CS2K "Driving School" mode, but it does offer you a little
more "bang for your buck" if you purchased F1 2000. Consider this the
F1 2000 "patch" that everyone thought EA should release instead of
F1CS2K, I suppose.
BTW, you should be pretty good at F1 2000 -- think of it as "GPL with
wings." <G>

I think it's not the amount of grip that troubles you, but the tire
cornering stiffness. This leads to slip angles that are too high, and
the yaw dampening is lower, making the cars feel more unstable than they
should be, and gives the illusion of driving on ice. If I could have it
my way, I would slightly increase (say, to about 3/2 the current value)
the stiffness in both Papy sims to bring the drifts into accord with
what's seen on footage.
I believe Nascar Heat got this part better; however, the rear axle in
that sim seems to be locked up; I'm not sure if it's realistic, but it
sure is frustrating to go from plough too snap oversteer all the time.
