Goodbye GPL as we know it.
Notable threadGPL engine swapper utility released, cheating fears
Regulars reacted to a newly released utility that let GPL players fit any engine into any chassis. Many feared it would undermine online racing, league administration and GPLRank. Others, including Roger Squires, noted that editing player.ini was already easier and that GPL drivers rarely cheat, and some welcomed the utility for offline fun.

Hi,
I saw it and...
I don't like it.
Sad day for us GPL'ers.

I assume you mean the engine swapper utility. Yep, I feel the same.
Online racing isn't going to be the same anymore.

There's a new utility out which lets you use engines in different
cars. Let the discussion about cheating begin!

Who cares. Editing player.ini times with notepad is much easier. Cheating
is rampant on nfs5 servers where you could just type in a cheat code to make
the car small and the road effectively much wider, or actually edit the
engine power and road grip, but the motivation for doing this in GPL is just
not there, and this swapping engines is pretty tame in comparison.

This absolutely sucks!
Shame on both the makers and the users!
No regards

P.S.: And whoever said that my Ringtrainer was cheating: Here you have the real thing!
the same feeling for me. Tons of work for league admins (engine change
during qualifying? pretend a disconnection... does the lap still count?)...
and the race itself; lotus and eagle use the same sound so it's difficult to
tell....

**COOL!**
I have to say that I'm really intrigued by this. Now I can finally
find out just how fast that little Brabham can REALLY go at Spa. I
can't say how much this will entertain me when playing GPL for the next
few months. The positives of this util far, far outweigh the negatives
for my own tastes.
As far as the online cheating implications, well, if you're racing on
VROC I can't see how it matters much. It's not like you're being given
an extra 500 hp and tripling your grip. Good drivers in a standard BRM
will still drive circles around bad drivers in Brabham-Hondas.
Cheating in leagues? Well, I can only say I'm glad I'm not a league
administrator. I think leagues are the only place this little patch
will have any negative effects. Then again, it shouldn't be *too* hard
to detect if somebody's swapped an engine. Since the "fast"
combination will likely involve the little bitty Brabham or the Lotus
with a more powerful engine, just look at the revs. Those two are the
lowest revving engines in GPL if left stock.
All-in-all, I think I'm going to enjoy this patch. I'll see you
tonight on VROC in my Brabham-Honda. Or maybe in my Lotus-BRM. Or my
Cooper-Ferrari. Or my...

So, if you put a BRM engine in any other car, what happens graphically
with the gear shifter. Does it move to the 6th gear slot even though
it's not there, or does it just not move past the 5th gear slot?

Bye bye GPLRank ;(
I was very proud of my +7 handicap, all times set with the Brabham.
Now I'm up against Brabham/Ford or Brabham/Honda etc...
Damn ;(

Come on lads, you'd swear it was the end of the world.
How can it possibly cause cheating? You can't jack up bhp can you? Just swap
engines?
If so, where's the problem, some for everyone, nobody can ever get an
advantage can they?
OMG, I just realised, hacks like this almost makes GPL "common", gasp :-)
pfft. Unknowingly uploading warp times from vroc races will be much more
common than any conscious cheating with this hack; I often have to go back
and delete bogus entries.
That's good you are avoiding the lotus, I'm at +10 with no lotus times.

Maybe, but as far as GPL Rank goes I really think that most GPL'ers won't
cheat. If one wanted to, you could always just change the driver's file and
submit the time if you really wanted to cheat, and I don't think that
there's much of that going around. This isn't NFS here.
As for me, I'm going to create a new driver profile and give it a go. It'll
be fun to try out a Brabham-Ferrari offline. But I certainly won't submit
any times to GPL Rank for this new driver.

Uh, but the ini files doesn't change anything to the game engine. No
possible modification.

The difference is we are Gentlemens (well 99.999% of us), compared to the
few present in the NFS5 community.
Still, I love that new utility. We now have 49 choices of chassis/engine.
WOW!

Based on the number of people swearing at Ricardo Nunnini at
the GPLEA forum, I'd say the percentage was a lot lower than that.

selfish people who goes "Oh no... all my time passed behind a computer

This is not about ruining lives, it is about knowing what game you are
playing.
This patch creates a new game, but is cunningly camouflaged as GPL. I would
like to drive GPL and being measured against other GPL-ers, not drive GPL
and being measured against users of this new game. How can I know which
drivers are driving GPL without studying the replay?
Jon Andersen
If I take a look at Gregers time in Monza in a Cooper and compare that to
mine in a Lotus, I am quite confident, that very good driving wins over
cheating.
Besides, I am convinced that serious simmers, who care a lot for realism,
are proud of driving the real Ferrari or BRM and are not eager just to
improve laptimes by 'cheating'.
Those who cheat are very likely loosing interest just to push a little
further, because they do not want to improve their style of driving.
Those who do will not have any interest in mixing up matters.
Tell me why there are so many folks who are driving monza in a Honda ? Or
even in a Cooper ? If they're only aimed to getting faster than others they
might just take another ordinary car.
No folks, I am not anxious about all that.
GPL is not a sim where you are up for cheating. It's a sim where you are up
to improvement.
Ways of getting better people find in themselves, not in the cheaten
physics.
If there were a Cooper-trophy or something alike, I should agree that there
was something to be expected.
Lets see what happens, I hope I am not so far from truth.
Cheers
