ive been playing gpl on vroc for what seems like an age and today i tried
out a new combination of Ferrari engine in the lotus chassis, my times were
slower than with the normal cosworth engine, around on par with my standard
ferrari times (no tweaking yet...), when some die hard GPLers start mouthing
about at me, which concludes with 'Fcuk all cheaters....'
i gota say some people are taking these games way too seriously....

Well that was one thing I was actaully wondering. The Cossie in any car
should be a great car, but some of the other motors I have my doubts.
Reason being is the torque curve on the Cossie is really good, but some of
the others leave a bit to be desired. Now a Cossie powered Ferrari might
not help that much since the Ferrari has a bit of drag added to it. The
Eagle is pretty great with the Westlake. the Brabham to me would stand to
gain the most since it lacks power of the cossie, but will it be worse to
drive with the Cossie compared to the Repco. Since the wieghts do not
change I do not think cars like the BRM or the some others will get much of
an advantage.
IT would have been a better program if the guy had changed more then just
the hp and torque curves tho. Adding the additional weight would have made
for a better program since it would be a bit more realistic. In the end I
would bet that the Loti Cossie combo is still going to be the fastest combo
since the lotus is a very very good car and the cossie is overall the best
motor for the game. I would say the Brabham Cossie would be a good combo
now since it would have the power to get better top speed, but its still
going to be a narrow car and now with more power a bit more ponderous to
drive then it is now. A Cossie BRM is still going to be an overweight
tank, as well as a cossie Cooper, and Cossie Honda.
League races will now just have a guy who does not run he just watches and
looks for guys who are running above the normal rpm range of the standard
car/motor combo in the game or lower then any standard combo. Yes its
subjective, but actually since I help with a SCGT Autocross style league
and we look at replays we use viewing the tape to help determine if the
runs are legal also. I am just bummed out since I am finally getting a
really nice wheel and well GPL is getting set on its ear right when I get
back to playing it.

Our next league event is at Imola and since I signed on
to drive the Brabham for the season I tested it there
with various engines last night. For reference, my best
time in Brabham Repco V8 from the night before was
a 1:33.87, although that was my first real go at the
track (my target would be low 33's).
First up was the Brabham Honda (hey, go for the gusto).
I'm not sure if 'ponderous' is the right word as the car
handled fine at the speeds I was used to driving, it just
was now capable of quite a bit more around the high
speed sections. So, in effect, I made my Brabham setup
a bit more like a Lotus setup - stiffer ARBs are what not.
I also had to pay more attention to my driving lines and
alter my driving style to use a more point and shoot
technique instead of concentrating on maximum corner
speed. It was a handful and a lot of long black lines
were laid down, but it was also good for a 1:31.70
after a short thirty minutes of testing. Looking at a
comparison in GPLRA it was all done down the
straights as I was 7 - 8 MPH faster at the end of
them despite being a tad slower in the corners.
Next up was a Brabham Eagle. This was a pretty nice
combination. The Honda seems to have a nasty spike
in power that makes corner exits an exiciting time for
the narrow tire shod Brabham, but the Eagle was more
like the Repco in that I could get on the power fairly
early without too much drama. I immediately ran a
string of times in the high 31s with a best of 1:31.53
set on my tenth and final lap. That compares quite
favorably with the overall WR of 1:30.70 and takes
quite a bit off of my previous best Brabham time.
I'll try the Brabham Cosworth DFV today, but I
suspect the Brabham Eagle will be the preferred
choice as it doesn't overwhelm the chassis at
corner exit but still provides a huge boost down
the straight.
I'm no slowpoke but I am not as fast as Gregor Huttu
either. Last time I checked my GPL Rank was around
fiftieth in the world, but I think the fact that I was able
to run a time within a second of the best time in the
world under an hour of swapping motors strongly
suggests to me that the Brabham F1 car will shortly
join its F2 & F3 brethren in being banned from league
competition. The aerodynamical advantage it has
over the other cars is simply too great and now that
it has the possibilty of equal or greater horsepower
it should be the class of the field.

You're getting this treatment because you have dared to deflower GPL's
pristine perfection. The engine swap patch is the type of thing that
actually gets people INTERESTED in things like GPL, and by using this
patch, you are demonstrating the type of sociopathic behavior that
threatens to ruin the inherent goodness that is currently represented
by VROC's closed, elitist community. It all seems innocent enough, but
first there will be casual users like yourself swapping engines, which
may seem harmless, but before you know it, word will get out that GPL
can actually be FUN, and then teenage fanboy arcade racers everywhere
will be spouting things like "GPL RULEZ!" on NFS forums and newsgroups
all over the Web. Next thing you know, vintage copies of GPL will be
selling for a mint on ebay, which will prompt Havas/Sierra to actually
re-release the title. Based on the ebay price run and the word-of-
mouth in various newsgroups, sales of the newly re-release GPL will
soar, and VROC will be swamped with the same sort of riff-raff that the
DTR community has had to put up with on GameSpy.
Now do you REALLY want this on YOUR shoulders? Abandon the engine-
swapping IMMEDIATELY so that GPL can remain an anonymous entity,
murmured about only in the midst of the true hardcore fanatics, and let
VROC remain a closed, tight-knit community forevermore.
Hang your head in shame, mister, and repent before it's too late.
You're getting the exact treatment you deserve.
