Windows 98SE versus Windows ME for gaming

A user asked whether to upgrade from Windows 95 to 98SE or ME. Opinions split: Larry and others called ME troublesome and stuttery in games, while daxe, Phasor and others found it the most stable 9x release once background features were disabled. Windows 2000 was also discussed, with notes on driver support and NASCAR Heat compatibility.

hardware: PC/graphicstech support

Automated summary.

IMHO... Windows ME is the most troublesome version of Windows MS has ever shipped. I find it especially poor for gaming because of all the back-ground crap going on. It causes serious stutter in games that need smooth frame rates, such as racing simulators. Also, the driver situation with WinME isn't where it should be. Since I'm going to get slammed, I figure I might as well make it worth it... I don't like Win98SE either. Personally, I refuse to use it and stick with Win98 Rev 1, with all the Windows Update patches applied. I find Win98 original release, with all the patches, the most stable Win9x release one can use. Win98SE has some serious design problems (not the least of which is the un-fixable shut-down bugs). FWIW... -Larry "David Golding" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Hi ya, > > Bit off topic but I can't get things working with Windows 95, new steering > wheel and its about time I crawled out of the 80's. I may get shot by Daxe & company for saying this but... WinMe only seems to perform well once you deactivate most of what *makes* it WinMe. IMHO, I'd go with Win98SE. -- Chuck Kandler Linux, because life's too short for a buggy OS. Registered Linux User #180746 http://counter.li.org

I would go with ME and shut down the background stuff, update IE remove media player to the older version. I run ME and W2K I find ME to be very stable despite the bad rap it gets. I've had it on my system since it came out and only experienced 1 BSOD. I think the TCP/IP stack borrowed from W2K worth it for multiplayer. Just curious as to what problems you're having with Win95? I'm also still using Win95 (OSR2) and have considered an OS upgrade a few times. However, the question that always stopped me was "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I have so much stuff hanging off my PC that I a) worry about finding the updated drivers for all of it, and b) don't even want to think about re-installing everything after a fresh OS install. Like you, I also use my PC for all sorts of stuff -- finances, racing sims, digital photography, racing sims, music, racing sims -- you get the idea. I run GPL, Rally Masters, F12KCS, Viper Racing and many of the latest sports games on it with no problems. The only problems I occassionally encounter are mainly due to the fact that I'm still using Voodoo2's (SLI). I even just installed a DVD-ROM drive, (see my other post BTW) and it works great (even without activating DMA). So, I still don't see a good reason to upgrade the OS. The main disadvantage is that I can't use USB. I guess that would be nice with my LWFF, but so far, I'm happy with its performance using the serial port. Just curious as to what specifically is the cause for you wanting to upgrade the OS? David Golding wrote:

I'm not going to blast anyone for not liking ME, to each his own, I guess. I have found it to be the most stable version of Windows 9* and I have used every single version and sub-version since 95. The transplanted Win2k network innards are way better than any patched up version of 95 or 98. Most of the "wizards" and self-repair things can be disabled and that improves performance, too. There is a lot of extraneous crap ladled onto it, I agree, but there is an essential stability with WinME that you can almost feel. 98 drivers work for most things in WinME and the specific driver support is starting to come in, too. For instance, there is a specific SBLive Liveware version for ME, now. It's also nice to have it shut down when you tell it to and the boot speed is a welcome change as well. ~daxe

IMHO Windows ME is one of the most NON-troublesome version of Windows MS has ever shipped. Looks like I'm the only one who thinks so. I've had less problems with it than anything else. No, the Second Editions are always better (3.1, 95b, and 98SE). First versions are always buggy. Need I say anymore? -Cheers! I dont use Winme because some applications I use dont run on it. And I dont use Win2k mainly because of the lack of drivers or good drivers for the stuff I have. So im with Win98SE......I haven't bothered trying Win95 again, because it needs sooooooo many updates, and I tend to reinstall windoze frequently to. hehehe
Mind telling me/us what the problems are in Win98SE compared to the original?........I skipped right from Win95 OSR2.1 to Win98 to Win98SE within a week or so :)....so I dont really know the difference between 98 and 98SE besides the udpated drivers and patches. Hi Larry, yep, I also miss DOS ;-) But seriously, I am using ME and W2K, and they are both good systems. ME is in my experience a stable operating system with the most sophisticated and comfortable GUI of all Windows9x versions. I do not agree with the complaints that ME is a hoax just because it still uses a kernel of the 9x family. Its core may still have some of the legacy elements in it, but it is a good and user friendly operating system in its own right. It has a lot of improvements over 98 (things that are also in W2K) which make it a very pleasant system to use. Like for example a Registry editor that returns to the key where you left it. Or customized menus. Or the PCHealth/System Restore functions. Or the auto-customizing context menu. Or the better hardware recognition (installing a different graphics card for example now works like in W2K - no deleting of drivers or returning to Standard VGA before swapping the cards is required - plug and play actually works). And there's more. As for drivers, that's an argument that is often mentioned, but I neither don't know anyone who's 98 drivers didn't work under ME, nor has it ever happened to me, and I do play around with the system quite a lot. I don't believe this issue has major significance. All my hard and software ran under ME just as it did under 98. I think ME can safely be recommended as a good operating system for the gaming oriented user. W2K runs all racing sims I've tried with the exception of Nascar Heat which starts but when you click on the race button it drops you to the desktop with an MGI Apology dialog. I have heard that some folks have gotten NH to work in W2K. W2K is a fine OS, but be warned the extra stability comes at a price called resources.
I think the big answer to the question is do you need to use Dos. Win ME is probably better than Win98SE but it does lack Dos access so no making good ol boot disks and a lot of old software just won't work. There again if you don't really need Dos then why not use Win2K. although in fact quite a lot of Dos stuff actually works in Win2K which is rather more than can be said for Dosless WinME. Personally I use Win2K 95% of the time and only use Win98SE for those few programs I still have that need Dos or the very few games that won't work in Win2K (a lot more work than you'd think). I also have WinNT sever and Linux Mandrake 7.1 but there again I'm a little eccentric in having 4 operating systems on one machine. Having used every version of windows extensively Win98SE is probably the best all round bet for gamers as long as you update it. The only thing going for ME is that it boots up really really fast. However if you want the most stable nice to use operating system and have lots of memory get Win2k Pro and perhaps dual boot with Win98SE for that old dos compatibly if you need it. -- Some Call Me Tim
I also had problems first installing my LWFF wheel (using the serial port). I'd install the software, then it would hang on reboot. Luckily, I use Goback to revert my system to a previous state (more an that later...). Upon reboot, I was getting an error message that a particular file was causing the problem. What I did was boot into safe mode (after installing the LWFF software), then deleted that file. As it turns out, it was a USB related file which was installed along with the LWFF software. As you know, Win95 doesn't play nicely with USB. To make a long story short, I've no problems since. At least nothing major -- Occasionally software installation screws up my system, but then I just "go back". But as I said previously, I use GoBack. It has saved my butt countless times. It's published by Adaptec now, originnally published by Wildfile. The price has just dropped to $39.95 at CompUSA. It is, by far, the best money I have ever spent on ANY software. It allows you to "go back", or revert your system to a time before your problem (ie - can't boot) occured. You don't need to know what caused your problem -- only need to know a time where your system was running OK. You can check it out and download a demo at www.goback.com. And, no, I don't work for Adaptec. But back to the original question -- See if your Thrustmaster is trying to install a USB driver (USB should be in the file name), boot to safe mode and delete that driver (save it to floppy disk first to be sure), and see if that solves your problem. Hi ya BRH, This a post I put on a couple of days ago and a problem I'm having with the Thrustmaster Force Feedback Wheel. Hi, I'm trying to install the Thrustmaster Force Feedback Racing Wheeel on a windows 95 machine. If I follow the instructions to the letter, it asks you to plug in the controller with the machine off (serial port), boot up the machine, when windows finds the new hardware type in e:\win95. I've done this with my cd drive being f. So f:\win95. It can find the software drivers, you can only do this by typing in F:\. This installs the software and I'm STILL getting the message "not connected". There is nothing faulty with the wheel, I could get it load correctly with a laptop. Why doesn't it work with my PC?? Anyone come across this?? Cheers Dave So this is where I'm at, in farting around with trying to get this to work the machine fell over and it took 2 full days to get it back to being a working machine. It was hanging every time you reboot and I couldn't get the mouse to work at all. So the situation is that I have a machine that works apart from the wheel that it still doesn't recognise, and the internet connection that now doesn't work at all. It dials the ISP and then disconnects. This is a slight problem as I'm a freelance web designer. So I'm a bit sick of Win95, and looking for the promised land of "plug and play". I'm not even sure if that exists either....... What do you recon, jump in there and go with the latest or go with the tried and true...... WinME is worth it purely for the faster boot-up time IMO - almost half that of 98SE - I'm surprised noone's mentioned this. It does use slightly more RAM than 98SE but if you've got 128MB or more, it's a non-issue. I disabled 'System Restore' mainly because I use 'Symantec Ghost' and the performance in games is as good if not better than 98SE. -- Damien Smith [email hidden] ICQ: 77028579 "Snoochie Boochies" - Jay "David R. I have also found ME to be the most stable and reliable version of Windows. Once you turn off all the crap in the background games run just as fast as they did in 98. IMO this is what was intended with Win 95, it just took them half a decade to iron out the bugs;) Chris -- www.geocities.com/simbokza Remove _your_clothes before replying "Phasor" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:W0GY5.53119$[email hidden]... > IMHO Windows ME is one of the most NON-troublesome version of Windows MS has > ever shipped. > > Looks like I'm the only one who thinks so. The email is listed below. "Optimizing Windows Millennium 10 modifications that I have made to Windows ME to gain SIGNIFICANT increase in speed, performance and security. I have tested these settings for over a month and haven't encountered any problems. After applying these tweaks and rebooting the free resources are 99%. Before you decide you actually want to give up these features for the extra speed you should read this page. http://www.microsoft.com/PressPass/features/2000/sept00/09-05winme.asp Keep in mind that the developers and testers for these features never encountered a worm or trojan or they may have found that PC Health and Restore will reinstall a trojan because it wants to take you back to the previous state before your "cleaning" modifications were made. Their ideas are good but unfortunately they didn't take these problems into account. It's also obvious they use very fast computers and didn't notice the deterioration of speed (compared to 9x) with all these features turned on. 1. Disable System Restore. Open Control Panel -> System -> Performance Tab -> File System - > Troubleshooting area -> Disable System Restore (While you are in this window click on the Floppy Disk tab and uncheck the box so the system doesn't check for a NEW floppy drive every time it starts.) ~~ 2. Uninstall Pc Health. Start / Run "\windows\pchealth\support\pchsetup /uninstall" ~~ 3. Turn off Automatic Updating. (This will hog your modem for 30 mins every day when you first go on line if you don't turn it off.) Start / Settings / Taskbar / Advanced then check Expand Control Panel and close and go to Start / Settings / Control Panel / Automatic Updates and turn OFF Automatic Updating ~~ 4. Use ram memory rather than the swap file. (The system needs OVER 64 megs of ram.) Start / Search / Files type and enter: "system.ini" then click on it and open it in Notepad and add this line after [386Enh] (without quotes) "ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1" ~~ 5. Set file system to cache about 20 times higher than its default setting. Copy and paste these lines to Notepad and name the file MaxCached.reg then click on MaxCached.reg from Windows Explorer and say Yes you want to add that information to your registry. (You must set Notepad to "all files" when you save it or it will save as text.) -------------------------------- copy below ---------------------------------- REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\FS Templates] @="Max Cache" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\FS Templates\Max Cache] @="Max Cache" "NameCache"=hex:00,18,00,00 "PathCache"=hex:80,00,00,00 ------------------------------- to above ------------------------------------ ~~ 6. Disable these settings in the start menu. Start / Run type and enter: "Msconfig" then click on Startup and UNCHECK PcHealth, StateMgr, SchedulingAgent and Taskmon Then allow the system to reboot so all these changes will take effect. ~~ 7. Run Windows Explorer and click on Tools / Folder Options / View and select "Show hidden files and folders" then browse the c: drive and delete the _Restore folder. Hold your shift key so it doesn't move it to the recycle bin while you press del. This folder can have hundreds of megs of temp files if you have been running ME for a while with the system Restore and PC Health on. If you get an error message saying there is a sharing violation you haven't successfully turned off Pc Health and Restore. The _Restore folder should NOT appears again in the future (unless you update a key Microsoft program like IE). ~~ 8. See if anything unnecessary is running all the time. Press CTRL + ALT + DEl at the same time, after you have first booted up and see what programs are loaded. You may find several programs running that don't need to run all the time. Most of them, if actually needed, can be loaded from the Start / Programs menu. ~~ 9. Don't let windows run HTA, SHS and VBS Script automatically. Those file associations allow viruses to infect your system. Open Windows Explorer and click Tools / Folder Options / File Types and delete HTA, SHS and VBSscript. It is very unlikely a normal PC user would need those file associations turned on. ~~ 10. Disable "Automatic check for Windows Explorer updates" >From the IE "Tools" menu click on "Internet Options" then go to "Advanced" and uncheck the 4th box. EVERY week back up modified files, defrag the system and update the definitions and scan the whole system with your favorite anti-viral program. Run Ad-Aware to fight the spying that a least 100 programs are known to do. (I do this mainly to save the baud width wasted by the data and banner ads that are passing back and forth.) I also manually load ZoneAlarm Pro. from time to time to monitor all programs and report everything that tries to access the internet. I don't like programs "calling home" without my permission. Note: Win ME does not use c:\command.com or win.com. I have found that deleting these files - that are NECESSARY for Win 9x - does not make a difference for ME. New cool feature I found in Win ME: When in DOS mode you can recall the past commands you have run from the dos prompt by pressing the up arrow key or page up. "

Whats the deal with WinME, is ita > nightmare or a cost effective solution. David, I've been using WinME almost since it came out. Here's the pros and cons of it...as well compared to Win98SE. I can also say that one of my long time friends, an MCSE, also concurs with my opinion...for what it's worth! ;] WinME. Very stable. I've had maybe 1 or 2 BSOD (blue screens of death) since I've had it...an that was when I was at 64 M RAM. It'll run all day, all night, and seems to have no trouble. Potential problems (programs locking up, memory shortage) seem to get taken care of with a minimal amount of problems. I'm now at 196 Meg of RAM, and have had NO problems since I upgraded...now, to the bad side of WinME... It's a memory HOG! 64 Meg of RAM is NOT enought to really run a computer that gets a fair workout (I use alot of 3d programs, plus racing sims, plus Adobe Photoshop, ect) and I was having alot of problems with memory running out. WinME handled that better than previous versions of WinXX, but I still had to kill alot of programs. One person mentioned that there is alot of stuff going on in the background. You can turn it off from your 'scheduled tasks' folder. I've had to shut everything down that was in there, because the PCHealth scheduler kept interrupting my racing...and I turned it off. Then, 2 weeks later, it's running again! So...DELETE! Now I'd like to see it start again... Win98SE. Worst 2nd edition I've ever seen. Why they sold it as a 2nd version I'll never know, as I've yet to figure out exactly what it fixed...all the problems that I had with Win98 I had with SE...now for the good parts... ;p *Most* of the drivers work!
