I haven't tried this patch - and not sure I'm interested.
Anyway, isn't there a way for someone with some programming knowlegde (such
as the creators of the patch?) to create another patch which could reveal
the engine used in some way? Then online leaugues could require entrants to
use this new patch so administrators can track engine use (studying replays
doesn't sound like fun). Perhaps it could also place a scambled code in the
player.ini file for hotlap sites to manage time from pure cars vs
modified's...
Just thinking out loud...

It's good to see some people are actually thinking. I don't think this
is the end of the world, or even the end of GPL as we know it. Someone
out there is probably working on something like you describe, right
now. That should at least stop the accusations of cheating - although
we all know, really, that any software can be hacked if you have the
knowledge and patience. Chances are people have been and will continue
to cheat in many ways for as long as we are sim racing. Just like real
racing, actually...
My view is that this is all a storm in a tea cup. The GPL die hards
getting all upset because it might now be possible for a good driver
to set a very good time. Do you really think that putting, say, a BRM
in a Brabham is somehow going to make it as easy to drive as a Mario
Cart? GPL is still the toughest sim there is, and so far as I
understand it the physics model is still intact. More than that, the
GPL audience has reached maturity. There won't be too many newbies
coming along, and those that do will not be the type that think NFS is
a realistic depiction of motor racing. People might try to cheat, but
it's GPL. Good driving will always beat fast, erratic driving.

I would think you would notice two things on an engine swap like a Brabham
Honda is the higher pitched sound due to higher rpms and well you would
notice the guys tachometer tail tail being much higher also. The Official
could be a steward of the meet and deal with any protests. He could also
sit down and what the action of the track for any unsafe driving.

It seems that if someone has already discovered where the engine performance
data is located in GPL, it can't be that much further a leap to modifying
the data itself. Might it not be possible to tweak the engine power curve to
give an extra 50hp or so? And an even bigger benefit would be to find the
chassis parameters somewhere and increase the coefficient of friction (i.e.,
grip) of the tires. That would be a killer!
This data is harder to find in GPL than many other sims because I'm sure it
is all done with floating-point math, and these numbers are impossible to
discover by simply eyeballing the display of a "hex editor". However, there
are many sophisticated debug utilities out there that could display the
values of floating point numbers and allow them to be changed. Papy did an
excellent job of hiding this data within the program, but it would be
impossible for it not to eventually be hacked!

The suspected cheater (or everyone) must "expose" the top rpm of his engine
to the adminstrator by applying full throttle while at neutral. Obviously
this must be done at a moment, when blowing the engine doesn't matter -
during qualifying or at the end the race. If I am not mistaken, it is
impossible to get exactly to the right rpm with a "wrong" engine. This way
only a few seconds of replay needs to be examined.
Just thinking aloud.
