I just added a DVD drive to my PC the other day, and today I decided to
treat myself with a DVD purchase at Best Buy. While I expected to get
some mainstream movie title, to my pleasant surprise I came across a
title called "Super Speedway". It's a documentary, filmed in IMAX,
covering the development of Michael Andretti's CART race car for (I
think) the 99 season (if I'm not mistaken).
If you're at all familiar with IMAX, I don't need to tell you that the
visuals and sound are great (but obviously not as good as in an IMAX
theatre. I would LOVE to see this in one of those.) They actually
mounted IMAX cameras on the cars to get close-up on-track views at
Homestead, Michigan, Elkhart Lake and others. Great sense of speed.
The film itself is 50 minutes long, and as a bonus, there's a
documentary on "The Making of 'Super Speedway' ", which is pretty
interesting in itself.
Oh, almost forgot to mention -- there's a tie-in to GPL era cars, as
well some vintage footage. All-in-all, well worth $20! Just in time
for Xmas too!

Well known. Saw it at an IMAX, and bought the disk. I prefer the "making of"
part over the actual film. Would have far preferred them to choose twice as
much in-car footage over the pretty vacuous story elements. Just show an
entire race from in-car!! There was some discussion here, or in the other
driving ng's about the in-car sound. I think it was heavily modified. Still,
I'm not sorry I bought it.
The GPL tie-in you mention is just about a restoration of an old indy car
(early 60's). I mention this to keep some from thinking there is anything
involving old F1 cars.

FYI - The IMAX caeras used only held a few minutes worth of film at a
time. The director told Mario the types if shots he wanted and left it up
to Mario to turn the camera on/off with a button on the wheel.
My Opinions (FWTW):
Onboard footage (and its picture quality), WELL worth $20-$30.
Onboard Sound, definitely synthesized.
As a movie, pretty bad.

It's great. Haven't seen it on a IMAX theatre though, only at
home. It's the 96 season.

yep, www.amazon.com has it for $17.99 US. The DVD is $21.24. Search for
"Super Speedway" and read the customer reviews. It gets 5 stars (out of 5)
average rating from 40 reviewers.

Yeah, I saw a "making of"-film about it some years ago. Never saw the
real deal though.
But this got me thinking... What if someone put a 35mm camera and
hi-grade microphones on an F1 and blasted around the classics, Spa,
Monza et.c. Release on DVD with the whole shabang, DD and all.
Doesn't have to be much more than that. 2h of incar footage is all I
need... :-) $30 here waiting... (at least) :)
