I joined an offline 3/4 GP league and had a blown piston on lap21 in a
ferrari, a real downer. Is is possible to prevent this by being careful or
not ?

Yes if you don't speed shift and have a long enough 5th gear you should
hardly ever blow an engine.

that is another story.

If not then the additional revs during the neutral phase will be sufficient
to (eventually) blow your engine.

Sometimes your engine is just gonna blow I find with GPL, as careful as you
are,it's just going to blow. Just like in real cars I guess if things are
wrong inside the engine.
You can prevent it though, you need not use the clutch when shifting up but
lift your foot off the gas. This helps tremendously, what you basically want
is the engine not to go to max revs for a second as you shift up. lifting
costs you time though but you can perfect shifting without redlining or
loosing time, its great.
It's possible to lower the risk of it happening but sometimes if just seems
inevitable.
