So I was in CompUSA today and saw an EA Sports title "Formula 1
Championship Season 2000" alongside some older copies of EA's "F1
2000". So what's the difference here? Both claim to have the 2000
season teams and drivers. Is F1CS just an update of F1 2000?

F1CS2000 is a significant update to F1 2000 -- far more than a simple
patch, though. Check out preview on the Blackhole Motorsports site for
details:

Yes, basically it is, but EA will tell you it's a new game ;) But F1CS is by
far the better game and also has the latest changes like the new Monza
chicane and an upgraded Spa-Francorchamps. Also new is wet weather and
better AI. So F1CS is basically an upgrade. A demo and a full list of
features can be found at
http://www.3dfiles.com/games/f1championshipseason2000.shtml.
Hope that helps.

F1CS is what F12000 should have been. I object to EA's rushing of F12000,
then asking me to pay again. I, hence, refuse to purchase from them

they have an agreement with Pepsi products that if you save the bottle tops
you can get a discount off their (EA's) website....
If however you already have F1 2000, you can d/l the demo of F1CS 2000, then
copy your tracks, cars, etc... over from the full install of F1 2000 (full
install required to do this I believe, at least that's what I had and it
worked), then go get the "No CD" patch from blackhole's website and voila!!!
You've basically got F1CS 2000 for free! Well... sort of... There are some
caveats, and it is buggy... Mine sometimes crashes to the desktop and you
don't see the cars and track maps when you go to race, or practice a
circuit, but hey... Since EA won't release a "patch" for F12000 to include
the improved graphics frame-rate engine, this is the next best thing!
In fact, it's perhaps even better than a patch, since you get an updated
Indy track, weather conditions, and driving school too!!!

I tried it, and applied to no cd patch to the demo, but I still can only get
Indy...
What are the specific files you need to copy?
Thanks,

future software purchases will become extremely intermitent.
EA saw the market forces about 2 years ago. They purchased
Sports Car GT, I believe, to quickly get a product out BEFORE Crammond
and Hasbro could ship GP3. They KNEW Papyrus was not going to release
another open wheel title, they knew Pygnosis has console-itis, they knew the
latest version of F1RS(3) was due even later than GP3. So they did the one
thing that could almost guarentee them being 'first to market' They bought
an
existing product (ISI's SCGT) and rather than start from the ground up(2 to
3 years...) they got something done in a very short time. (about 1 year from
the time SCGT was released).
True, F1CS2k is what F12k "should" have been. But would they have made as
much profit, which in turn controls future development, if they waited til
GP3 had been released, and months after the season is over, produce a year
2k sim title.
We can bemoan the fact that SUITS are running and/or ruining software
releases, but if a product doesn't make money...we won't see future
improvements.
Do you think Hasbro or Papyrus blinked when Nascar Heat was released?
Papy pushed back thier release date and Hasbro Int. had to begin a patching
program that still isn't completed. Market windows are often very tiny. A
company sometimes has to be able to move quickly when an opening occurs.

I'm not so sure I'd be so charitable to even accept that F1CS2000 is what F12K
should have been. Note: following based on demo and reading here...
It is still equally slow (by my tests and going against other net and manf
claims). AI could still be better (though it is improved, at least at the
demo track). Tracks should still be of higher fidelity (see comments others
have made about Monaco). Doesn't sound like an F1 car to me (at least
external sounds). Still no telemetry. Still no after race reports.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed F12K. But I don't think F1CS2000 is that much
of an improvement. Certainly not worthy of a separate release to me.
Obviously it was to the marketeers (your point, I know).
Daily Radar has a review up if you want to know more about this patch EA is
making us buy. You may want to hold off until F1 2001 comes out in March.
