Hi all,
Always wanted to compare your times to the actual 1967 times? Here's your
chance!
I've created a GPLRank account with the laptimes (Qual and Race) of the
actual 1967 events (with the 1968 Rouen event replacing the real event at Le
Mans). The username is 1967benchmark.
If there are any errors in the times please let me know!
Now go and and this to your buddy list :-)
Cheers,
Herko
Real 1967 lap times added to GPLRank as a benchmark
Herko ter Horst created a GPLRank account with the actual 1967 qualifying and race times so players could compare themselves with the real drivers. Posters explained anomalies such as Kyalami, where teams still ran 1966 cars, and Spa, which GPL models inaccurately, and discussed altitude effects and the role of fear in real racing. The thread drifted into personal GPLRank progress at the Nurburgring.
Automated summary.
Was Kyalami a different layout back then? 1:28 seems pretty darn slow!

Most of the grid would have been in a different configuration at the start
of the season then is modeled in GPL:
Lotus was running the 43 with the BRM engine, Gurney was running the Climax
engine, Brabham was running last years car, Ferrari didn't show at all
etc......
Kyalami is at an altitude of 1700 metres which affects an engines
performance due to the thin air. When you drive to Johannesburg from the
coast you can feel the difference in performance due to this.
GPL doesn't model the different altitudes of tracks so the motors have the
same power at all circuits as if they are at sea level. There is a line in
the track.ini files in GPL for track altitude, this was obviously a feature
that was left out of the final release.

Great! Thanks! Very nice idea!
And I am better in one place: Kyalami! -0.720.
I guess this is first time I am "better" in anything in GPLRank....
Well it was the the first race of the season and they used still -66 cars..

Or perhaps there is an error... ;-)
Arto
Rob, given the specs of the engines (Cosworth introduced at Zandvoort in
'67) it is better to compare it with '68. Clark his pole was then 1:21.6

100 laps of Monaco going at that speed!! Weren't they using wings by

Presumably those are the fastest lap times (or qualifying), not the best
average during the whole race!

OK, so I know why the 1967 Kyalami time was much slower than in GPL (they
were using 1966 cars), but why is the Spa time so much slower?
I read somewhere that the Honda was going well at Spa, but got behind at the
start and then the radiator was holed by a stone thrown up by the leader.
Why wasn't the Eagle fastest there, as it is in GPL?
Maybe reality didn't live up to the accuracy of the simulation? :-o

Again, Honda was still using the older heavy RA273 chassis, Denny was using
an older Brabham, etc....
Check out: http://www.isanski.freeserve.co.uk/frameset.htm
Maybe somebody should add Gurney, Hulme, Stewart etc.. to GPL rank instead
of one "pole" benchmark.
Also if GPL has something wrong in it's speed/hp/aero modelling, Spa is
going to be where is shows up.
The idea that I (or likely any of us) could qualify on the front row of a
GP, with no racing background, no depth perception (2D computer screen), no
sense of acceleration or motion and no feedback from the brake, means the
game isn't 100% realistic.
Try driving your car with a patch over one eye, an inner ear infection and
your left foot asleep and see how well you do.

But how many time did you "virtually" die in GPL, since you have no fear
problems while racing in front of your monitor? Since you can test and test
and test the limit of a car and have the chance to know where the edge is
(by having no fear of going past it as you can simply restart the car), you
have an incredible advantage that overtakes any of those virtual problems.
Real life drivers couldn't shift-R.

Spa simply isn't accurate in GPL. I know Rouen isn't either, but it's mainly
an elevation thing there, but Spa is fairly drastically out. I think the
sweeper at Kya is a bit faster in GPL, however I do agree with the '66 cars
theory. In '68 pole was a 21.6! The Spa comparison is interesting :O)
My 2 cents, although it is worth less everyday ;O)

Because they raced in Real Life. Real Life racing has a distinctive
game feature that GPL lacks. It's called death and occurs with little
effort when driving Masta at 295 kph. I've also heard that the track
surface was fairly slippery, and that the track predated the current
groundhog-laden Canada GP track by several decades in its invention
of having fluffy animals wandering loose about the track. Yeah, I know,
the teams could just have gone and installed cattle bumpers (or whatever
you call those metal bars at the nose of all the ATVs) in the cars,
but still..
> Why wasn't the Eagle fastest there, as it is in GPL?
The car might've been, but the drivers weren't. And didn't Gurney
win the race?
+Cinquo
I'd go along with that - I have no illusions that the process of learning to
drive GPL is anything like that of driving a real car.
It's a clear indication that the sense of speed in the game, although
excellent by computer game standards, is nothing like that of reality.
I was *really* trying to drive carefully when I started, but I lost count of
the number of times I just ploughed straight on in turns.
It was great to learn Goodwood online a couple of days ago, driving it for
the first time - I now have just enough skill in GPL to stay on the track
while learning!

What I mean is any time you take a map (image of the world) it is not
flat. You have taken a flat image of a round section of object and
placed a flat object on top of it. Should they align? and are their
projections the same? Heck for that matter has that section of Earth
changed (streched/contracted), in the last 20 years? or is that an
1967 image?
Sorry I realy need to seek help :-)

I remember an early interview with Dave Kaemmer in which he said that they
were never able to correctly tweak Spa to get the times right for some reason.

Yeah, but the Lotus 49 and the Eagle-Weslake were there, and their times are

The big problem for me at the ring is that after half a lap I really
have to focus on pushing that throttle pedal. When I do the first part
of the Ring ok, I'm just too afraid to push it during the second
half.. It's hard concentrating at top level for more than 8 minutes..

8:40 is pretty darn good! I only hit 8:29 when battling Michael Carver
for position :) Man, that was a long time ago. When racing online, if
you can hold a consistant 8:30-8:50 you'll be doing fine. Some of us
aren't ment to do sub 8's. I'm one of them.

Yeah, today I ran an 8:46 with one spin, and an 8:45 clean. I'm amazed that I
could almost make up the 6-7 seconds I lost with the spin. If I could figure
out how to drive that way the whole lap, I'd be ok...

Online? Add about 15 seconds. In a real race, I'm too worried about crashing,
so I'm usually not very fast. Besides, there are very FEW 'Ring races served
in VROC.

Buddy... that means that a 8:35 should really be possible for you!!
My pb is 8:25 now, but most laps are in the 8:30 range.. damn, you're
REALLY getting close now!!
Keep practicing Eldred, you're getting there...
