To expand: Railriding makes you faster. Anyone can do it easily. If no-one is watching you at the right time, you could get away with it. GPLRank doesn't allow railridden (new word?) times. It's more of a problem at Monza than anywhere else. All these arguments apply to the swapper. It does seem to me that saying "well, you could always use it yourself if you don't like losing" is no different to saying "well, you could always railride yourself". Yet no-one accepts railriding, even those who are relaxed about the swapper. Why? So: sure, bring in "open engine" races, but if you're going to go down that route you might as well bring in "railriding allowed" races as well. (And no, it is *not* true that all VROC races have it anyway.) One other point: sure, VROC is much more about close racing than winning, and that's fine by me. But for those of us who aren't in leagues, it's our *only* chance to win against other people. I don't mind that being a pretty slim chance, but I *do* mind it being made impossible. -- David. If I hit a guardrail (which btw is only at Monza, there ain't other tracks where it's an advantage) then I'll slow down because i'm a Gentlemen. If a server tells me that I shouldn't have swapped engines in this race, then I'll do it. It's something you could do in real-life. You can't rail-ride in real life. -- -- Franois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... -- http://www.WeRace.net -- People think it must be fun to be a super genius, but they don't realise how hard it is to put up with all the idiots in the world.

Maybe a hotshot doesn't get an advantage, but an average driver certainly does. > then I'll slow down because i'm a Gentlemen. >If a server tells me that I shouldn't have swapped engines in this race, >then I'll do it. But putting "rocket fuel" in the tank, taking steroids or bribing your competitors could all happen in real life - doesn't make them acceptable. And in real life there are stewards to disqualify people with illegal engines - in the hectic business of VROC pickup races that's pretty much impossible. I must say, even though I disagree with much of it, that I'm impressed with the way you've argued your case on this thing. It's a hell of a lot more consistent than most (me included), and I can only respect that. Doesn't mean I agree, though... ;-) -- David. Railriding is not a sportsman thing to do, that's the main point compared to swapping an engine. The second is a mechanical enhancement I feel, like creating a better setup. Of course, this is if everybody is on the same level. > I must say, even though I disagree with much of it, that I'm impressedwith > the way you've argued your case on this thing. I doubt some people at Papyrus have time to devote at a 2year old game, but who knows what some people can do in their spare time. The guys at Papyrus appreciate GPL as strong as us. I'm all for a restriction or enforcement of the engine swapping. Having that will cure all the current discussion. -- -- Franois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... -- http://www.WeRace.net -- People think it must be fun to be a super genius, but they don't realise how hard it is to put up with all the idiots in the world.

>>It's something you could do in real-life.<< This is a completely vacuous argument. There is no way in hell you could get the Repco V8, for example, to make as much power as the Honda V12 without supercharging of some kind. On the other hand, actually transplanting the Honda V12 into the Brabham chassis would make for a completely different car. The weight, CG, polar moment of inertia etc. would change considerably and most likely produce something that handles like a 430HP, Type I, Volkswagen on skinny crossplies. If you think the "swappah" has anything at all to do with realism, your just kidding yourself. It's just a hack and a poor one at that. Derek.
