Hello, Yesterday I finally bought the V5 5500. Installation was free of troubles, altought it almost didn't fit into my case due to the homemade air duct from the front fan to the cpu-cooler :) In GPL it was simply beautiful with 2xFSAA. When I turned it on using the demo key after only 10 seconds, I couldn't believe that it looked that bad. However, I'm somewhat disappointed by the performance of the card. I have a Cel566@850, and with 1024x768 2xFSAA, 2/3 details, car&track in mirrors, and drivers arms and wheel off, the FPS counter was between 35-36. Not solid 36 in other words. Starting from behind i a full field it was down to 30. Am I expecting too much with the 2xFSAA ? I seem to remember that there was a V5 tweak guide at Eric Cote's simracingmag, but couldn't find it. Anyone know of other resourses ? -- Olav K. Malmin remove .spam when replying

The 35-36 figure could mean that you have vsync enabled on your card, so it cannot give constant 36 fps. On the other hand, if you have detail sliders high, I don't think it's the graphics card fill rate that limits rendering, but the geometry transformations of the polygons on other cars, which didn't gain anything from the new card. What happens at 4xFSAA, what are the FPS results in this case? -Gregor

I think vsync was disabled. It may be that i pushed the details a bit too far. > What happens at 4xFSAA, what are the FPS results in this case? Haven't tested that much yet. Actually, yesterday I mostly checked that the card was working at all, since I also got Gladiator on DVD and had to see it :) More testing today. My goal will be to find a nice setup with solid 36 with 4x FSAA. Good to be back with the cpu-is-the-limit situation :) PIII850's a coming down in price now :) -- Olav K. 35-36 *is* constant 36fps. With every computer I have played GPL on, the counter bounces between 35 and 36...it just seems like that is how it is. I don't think you have hit any limit where the computer can only turn 35fps, not 36...I have an Athlon 800 and V5 and with 4x FSAA I get constant 36 (read 35-36 jumping) fps...Also 30fps is good for starting behind a full field...at least with your detail settings...when I turn EVERYTHING on to full detail with 4x fsaa at the start of a full field at monaco, I get something like 22fps...I turn everything down, though, so I can get top FPS always. You definately will have to move up the cpu chart to get better framerates with 4xfsaa. Most of the posters have settled on 2xfsaa and even 800x600 as a sweetspot. dave henrie "Olav K. Malmin" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I had the same problem with my PIII650E@800. Try G. Smiley's glide wrapper with top mirror setting. If you can get used to the mirror placement (I did NP) you should be able to max the graphics running 1024x768 4xfsaa, although I run 800x600 online just to be safe.... 1024x768 is do-able. Leaves little doubt that the mirrors are the graphics bottleneck in GPL. Ymmv. DN Olav K. Malmin <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I don't like the looks of the top mirror (with the frenzied atmosphere here lately even this has been called a 'cheat') but I agree about mirror slowdown. Everyone running the glide wrapper should choose the 'mirror frequency=2' glide.ini option, I run at 1280x1024 full detail on most tracks and this option gives a 4fps boost on a full grid and doesn't affect overall graphics detail. rms [email hidden]

Did a lot of testing yesterday. 2xfsaa at 1024x768 almost cut it, but when I pass another car on the track, the fps goes to the 30's. I guess I have to settle for the 800x600. It still looks miles better than 1200x1000 no fsaa with my V3. I'm a little bit disappointed that I was not able to do the same resolutions with 2xfsaa as my V3 without, but I may be expecting too much. The card is a beast when no fsaa in use, so the first person shooters (No one lives forever looks really promising) might be a blast. -- Olav K. Malmin remove .spam when replying
We have been so conditioned by the use of higher resolutions = better image that your almost have to relearn what a good image is. Like you said, 8x6 with fsaa is better than screen resolutions that are much higher. Once you break yourself of the expectation that you HAVE to use higher screen resolutions, you'll find many programs that benefit greatly from fsaa. dave henrie "Olav K. Are you using the Glide or Direct3D rasterizer? Due to the way that the mirrors are rendered, Direct3D is faster when using FSAA. I run 2XFSAA at 1024x768 with the detail slider 3/4 of the way to the right and all other details on and get a constant 36 fps except at the back of the grid on starts. And the fps only drops for a few seconds at the start. This is with a P3-550 by the way. No One Lives Forever is a blast and runs great with the V5. Kyle

Tried the Direct3d rasterizer yesterday. What a difference. Earlier I had problems running a solid 36 on 800x600 2xFSAA. Now I am able to run 1200x1000 2xFSAA, 36 fps that dips onto 33 on some ocations, so I guess I have to use 1024x768 on online racing. At 1200x1000 2xFSAA it looks just stunning. Thanks a lot for the tip. :) -- Olav K. Malmin remove .spam when replying
