Whenever I got this kind of hang in a game the culprit was always the sound
card. In my case it was an older A3D card and I had to disable 3D sound
support (in the sound card's driver setup) to cure the hang.
It affected Need for Speed High Stakes and Sports Car GT if I recall
correctly.

FF is also shite. Try some different drivers for your card .
