Using a joystick now in N4 and I wonder if a wheel is really going to
help lower my lap times at all. Anyone notice a decent jump in their
racing times by switching input devices?

All depends on your preferences, I believe that some of the fastest
people in most driving sims use a Joystick, possibly in combination with
pedals, it's all about personal preferences and how immersed you want to
be in the experience
I could never go back to running with a Joystick now, but I don't like
these FF wheels much either

I think braking and acceleration is much more precise using pedals, than
joystic or keyboard buttons. That's a much bigger issue on road courses
than ovals, of course. You can probably turn out lap times just as fast
with a joystic on the ovals.
BUT...the wheel/pedals just feels more like driving, better lap times or
not. I could personally not go back to joystick driving after using a
wheel. My 2 cents.

You may be slower while you adjust to the wheel, but shortly after I am
sure you will find Faster and more consistent laps.

I'm a longtime flight simmer with joystick, throttle and pedals and did a
lot of racing with the joystick, which was great. Good thing about a
joystick - you can go from full left to full right very quickly. The main
reason I ended up getting a wheel was because my arm/hand got tired because
I couldn't really rest it on the joystick. With a wheel you can race all
day, and it offers a little more precision (not as much as I thought it
would though). It's taken me about a week of solid racing and tweaking to
get good with it.
Hope this helps,
-Travis

Well, I'm probably one of the oddball cases, but my best lap speed at
Michigan was just above 171 with my T2 wheel, but when I plugged in my MS
Sidewinder FF joystick (for some other games I have), my best lap was
179+. Go figure!

I've just the opposite experience. I use a joystick, without pedals, for
GPL because that's what I had available when I started. Eventually, I
bought a wheel, but I'm still about 2 sec slower with it, mostly because I
haven't adjusted to using the pedals. When N4 came out I started out using
the joystick, but when I tried the wheel my average times at Michigan
dropped about 0.5s. I think the benefit comes primarily from having
dual-axis pedals; with the joystick, I can't use the brake and throttle at
the same time.

exercise (i don't play very much), i could get good laps times but when i
buy the wheel _the same day_ i could get laps 2 or 3 secs faster, and more,
now with the wheel i can control the skids before i spin at the first error.
Other important think, i desactivate now, with pedals, the ABS and traction
control, and (with F1RS) I can get more effective (but difficults an
dangerous ) breaks an acelerations. With joy that was impossible to control.
This is my experience with F1RS but every game use the controls in
differents ways, and (I think) in a Nascar game is not so important the
perfect control of accelerator and breaks.
