stuff. Until they sold off the business to Gullimot...now I don't know what
they
put out. I had a 2nd generation Rendition card, they have disappeared
Aureal oem soundcard with A3D 2.0 AND software EAX, damn fine card, not a

3dfx cards...I got the Canopus 6 meg V1 late in the first cycle, the V2 sli
cards were already out. (Canopus got out of the consumer video card
business shortly after the launch of th V2's.) Then a Voodoo3 and Voodoo
5, both by 3dfx.

Dave Henrie joked that every product he favoured, such as Thrustmaster, Rendition, Aureal and 3dfx, had died or been sold off. Others shared their own lists, including Betamax, Video 2000 and the L-1011, and the thread wandered off-topic.

No, I suffer from the same curse: Betamax, Valdocs, Geo operating system,
Lockheed L1011, DMSO, DOS, Kaypro, PD CDs, Rendition cards, MX300, XTree,
WordPerfect, Xerox stock, you name it.

Good thing I've already converted to AMD then :-)
I think it's sad news indeed, just like I thought it was sad when Aureal
and Rendition disappeared, and although I personally wasn't a big fan of
either, they kept the pressure up on their competitors
But if we look at it another way, we will probably get a little more
stability in the vid card market, and our vid cards might last longer
than 6-9 months before being "old", win some lose some I guess

Do you think you could send me a list of which products you will be buying
next year? I'm in the process of re-vamping my investment portfolio and
would like to know what stocks NOT to own and if there is any short-selling

No I suffer from the same curse. 486dx when pentiums came out only a month or
2 later, pentium 2 300mhz only to see them get as high as 450mhz in about 3
months, Voodoo3 3000 5 months before Voodoo4 came out, 2x DVD-ROM right before
4x and 6x DVD-ROM came out, Aureal A3D sound card....the list goes on. Next
computer...AMD, SoundBlaster, and GeForce...or maybe I shouldnt curse the new
technology :)

Rephrase that to read that quaility wasn't important enough for other
manufacturers to pay the license fee to Sony and also not important enough
for the recorded-tape production houses.

In 1974 I was fortunate enough to be invited to fly on the demonstration
flight arranged by Lockheed when the L1011 visited Sydney on its way to
Japan to join JAL.
(That was one awesome demonstration of hands-off technology, the pilot not
taking manual control until after the 'plane had started its touchdown run.)
Several months later the same aircraft was involved in a fatal crash in
Japan.

Are those the Philips ones you used to see faintly desperate display
adverts for in Exchange&Mart? ("Videos only 50!" etc)[1] I don't think
I've ever even seen one in the metal.
[1] "Video" as in the machine (what Americans call a VCR), not just for a
tape!

The Video 2000 system was the route Philips took at the start of the
eighties. The tapes were double sided (like an audio cassette, only
bigger:)) and you could get up to 4 hours each side. The picture quality
was superb, way back in 1981 we had perfectly clear; freeze frame, slow
motion and fast forward, with no lines on the screen just a perfectly clear
image.
The reason we had a machine was because my father worked for Philips (Pye
actually, but that will mean nothing to anyone outside the UK) and I guess
we got it cheap. It worked well for six or seven years until we finally had
to concede to the irresistable advance of VHS.

Wrong...we had a Pye factory in Sydney which manufactured some of the first
television sets for OZ back in the 1950's. The factory was still there in
1967.
Pye had a name for high-quality electronics...not just TV sets but radios as
well.

Did you know that the *real* wannabe operating system called Windows
(1.x to 3.x, 95 up to ME) just sits on top of DOS as well?
Jan
I was slightly incorrect there as even down here in SA some people still
remember Pye products. I think more recently they were solely a UK brand.

Yeah....you're probably right about that, Chris. I don't think that they've
been sold locally since the late sixties/early seventies here.
NZ also had Pye products; maybe from the Australian factory.
Anyway....they had a good reputation, as did EMI - Thorn, which I think was
also from the Motherland. :-)
