3DFX is no more. Do I buy a V5 while I can?

Lots of Q's! With GPL in mind, I'm thinking I shoud grab a V5 while I still can. What is the state of the latest V5 drivers? Are there any major bugs or incompatabilities? I recently tried GPL on a Radeon 32MB DDR with somewhat discouraging results. I fiddled with the core.ini render parameters, but couldn't get much moer performance w/o killing the detail, mip size, or resolution - something I'm unwilling to do. The GPL D3D patch seems to inflict a large performance hit. My V3 looks better and runs somewhat faster and more smoothly than the Radeon. (Of course this is GPL only. With everything else, the R kills the V3) I didn't remove my 3D wheels, do the they have a large effect on D3D performance? I'm running a Tbird 850 and like 1024x768. Thanks -Greg ============ Anti-Spam measures have been taken! Remove duplicate letters to reply.

I run GPL on a PIII700 @ 833 with a V5 in 1024x768 FSAA2x and graphics are much better. The best you can have at this moment. I have tried also a GF2 GTS, but FSAA is not good in that card. In conclusion, no problems at all with V5 at this moment, but who knows for the future? geps Driving per gli appassionati di Grand Prix Legends http://www.multiplayer.it/driving
GPL runs at 1600x1200 using my GeForce 2 GTS and the fps meter never flucuates off of the 32fps. The only reason to buy a voodoo card now is if you want to sell it for profit on ebay. Personally I wouldn't have bought one while the company still existed - now that they are defunct I wouldn't touch one. Greg Campbell <[email hidden]> wrote:

Except you really should be at 36fps...especially if you go online.... turn down the detail some lad. dave henrie "Sinjin" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > GPL runs at 1600x1200 using my GeForce 2 GTS and the fps meter neverflucuates > off of the 32fps. Strange... I *just* yesterday got my Xmas "prezzie": Dell PIII933 with ATi Radeon 32MB DDR (OEM) and before I put away the packing material... you guessed it... I had GPL loaded, patched and ready to go. Absolutely solid 36 FPS at the Ring for the whole lap with anti-aliasing turned on. 1024 X 768 all features on (including full mirrors). To be fair I usually play at 1280 X 1024 but I was using my wife's monitor which does 1024 X 768. At that higher resolution my old machine with a Rage Fury does 24-36 FPS in GPL. I also didn't try it with the original drivers. As with any ATi card you should immediately grab the "special purpose" beta drivers from ATi. ATi's driver cycle seems to lean towards the conservative. I've used "beta" drivers continously with three different ATi cards now spanning 5 years and never had a problem. sorry for the typo. 36 is what I mean. I'm sure its getting more than that if Sierra wasn't locking down the meter at 36. "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Win ME. Tonight I tried it with W2K Pro on the same machine and it didn't work so well. Terrible in fact... the graphics are all messed up. I'd experiment but I'm not in the mood tonight. I'll have to try some other drivers later in the week. Oh what the hell, I fiddled with W2K a bit more and it's working fine now. ATi drivers are very touchy.... I find one really needs to "uninstall" the card and/or switch to generic VGA drivers before installing new drivers. That's what I did and it worked great. 36 FPS solid around the ring using a ATi Radeon 32MB DDR (BTW, this is a Dell OEM part so the clock speed is a bit lower than the retail product). The image isn't significantly better than with my old Rage Fury but the frame rate is a lot smoother.
