In between breaking my old MSFF (gameport) and getting my new one (USB), I
had to make do with an ancient, loose MS joystick, so naturally turned FF
off. Lap times were, of course, awful (eg losing ~1.5s/lap at the Glen).
Then I got my new MSFF, set up a "scheme" for GPL, and off I went. In my
first week, I've broken 8 "specific PBs" (eg Silverstone/Ferrari/Race).
Last night I got my first ever sub-1:30 at Silverstone in anything other
than a Lotus (1:29.90 in a Ferrari). Pretty chuffed all round.
Tht thing is, I've had FF turned *off* in core.ini all that time, but
turned *on* on the wheel itself. It works like a dream - I ain't going back
to "full FF" now! :-) Anyone else had success with this method?

Sounds like your driving without FF to me. I find myself driving
better in GPL with FF turned off to, so dont feel ashamed ;)

Why should I feel ashamed, for heaven's sake? There are some far better
drivers than me in this NG who don't use any sort of FF.
And I'm not exactly driving without FF - that would entail having it turned
off on the wheel as well. As I have it, the self-centring is still there,
and the resistance round corners is still there.
And in any case, I'm faster and smoother this way, which is enough
justification on its own, I think... :-)

That is what I had to do at first with my change from a Thrustmaster
GP1 with custom pedals
(http://www.bhmotorsports.com/images/dbh_pedals_big.jpg) to an ACT
Labs Force RS with the same custom pedals. It took about a week for me
to convert and the first night the Force RS was nearly out the window
:-). Now I have the FF a 65% and I do not think I could drive GPL
without the ever-so-slight nudging that FF is giving me.
