Hi, all
I've been enjoying the HELL out of Grand Prix Legends for the past month.
Christ, I think it's actually improved my real life driving by a notch or two,
LOL. I can't wait to give my brother his copy for Christmas...
I was just curious if anyone knew why the Ferrari is conspicuously absent in
the game manual. I would have liked a bit more history and driving notes about
that (really fun to drive) car.
Thanks
Notable threadWhy the Ferrari is missing from the GPL manual
A new GPL player asked why the Ferrari was absent from the manual. Steve Smith, author of the 'Four-Wheel Drift' guide, explained that Ferrari's licence approval came so late that Papyrus removed the Ferrari section before printing, and Andre Warringa linked his advanced setup guide. Smith also recalled his Car and Driver days, including a notorious marijuana-and-driving test.

Our old "friend", "licensing issues" again... the approval from Ferrari to
use their name came so late that the makers couldn't risk putting it in the
manual - if they'd put it in and Ferrari had then refused, the whole lot
would have had to be pulped.

Eric,
What David said.
Ferrari was in the ms. I handed in to Papy, but absent w/o an explanation
when it came back from the printer. I explained all this in "Steve Smith's
Advanced Setup Guide" (otherwise hopelessly out of date) over on Alison
Hine's site. Help yerseff.

Hi Steve,
The Four-wheel Drift guide was a great addition to GPL. At least I could
pore over it while away from the PC at work and rush home to try something
new. My copy of it is well worn :)
Well done,

Yes, it is indeed a fine book, the only things I miss are trackmaps.....

Pleased to make your acquaintance, sir. That was an absolutely excellent book.
I don't suppose that you have the "deleted" section on the Ferrari available
to the public?
This reminds me of the Monty Python skit in the bookstore, where the
"expedited" version of Four-Wheel Drift doesn't have the Ferrari...(I can't
remember which bird was excluded from the Standard Book of British Birds, LOL)
Thank you, Mr. Smith
Frank
P.S.: Is it normal that I still suck at this game after a month?

Well...after a month, I've usually gotten the hang of most racing games (like
Viper Racing), but GPL is proving to be a bit more tenacious, LOL...
Frank,
Trek yourself down to the local library and flip through some old _Car &
Driver_ magazines (USA), circa 1977 to . . . what?--85? Steve's one of the
sharpest, enjoyable and most unpretentious writers that magazine's ever had.
(The marijuana test was absolutely fabulous: great journalism that should
have made it out of the confines of the auto-rag readership.)

Keep in mind that, essentially, you are driving the same cars as Jim

it's a pretty accurate one.
So, even if, like me, you can't break 1:30 at Monza after 18 months
trying - don't feel bad. There's maybe a half dozen guys in history
who could REALLY drive these cars - with that in mind, I think those
of us who can run consistent, halfway decent times are doing pretty
damn well. Still... if I didn't want to be beating Jim Clark, I
probably wouldn't keep coming back. And back. And back...

Sure. After a drinking & driving article, I suggested a smoking & driving
article (due to my, ah, predelictions at the time). Trouble was, our
methodology was fundamentally flawed (keep on drinking and you get drunker;
keep on toking and you actually get *less* stoned...particularly if yer a
heavy user). So the results (carefully measured by before & after tests
driving a course laid out with pylons in a parking lot) made it appear like
you got better and better the more you smoked. The real problem, as any
dope fiend knows, is not short-term concentration (which can actually
improve), but, after a while, remembering what planet yer on, never mind
where yer going. I was once with Lord Fox, Duke of Methadone, crossing the
Golden Gate bridge in a Triumph Spitfire when he got caught in the grip of a
conviction that we were in a *Supermarine* Spitfire, and had to disabuse him
of the notion that he could pull back on the "stick" and soar up, up, and
away. Ah, the Sixties....

Even though I wipe out with astonishing regularity and spectacular aplomb ( two

Hope you don't mind my saying so, but after you left, C&D went down the tubes,
IMHO.... you and Brock Yates were the class of that mag.
BTW, reading through some old R&Ts (another mag that's gone straight into the

Great fun.
And I still have a subscription to C&D (and R&T and MT and Automobile

Well, guess that it's really a matter of taste. I find Brock Yates to be a
horrible bore and the single most unreadable part of the car mags I read (I
too subscribe to R&T and C&D, get most of the Autoweeks, and had MT until my
parrot died). And I don't mean because of his vocabulary.

All in all I'd rather read Peter Egan, but I do like the way BY can
splatter his prodigious vocabulary all over things. I think in his
case it's style over content that attracts me.

Easier to drive, but boring when you try to catch others, and do not
succeed.
BRM: 415 hp for 615 kg = 1.48 kg/hp
Lotus: 400 hp for 500 kg = 1.25 kg/hp
Lotus better by 20 % ! Huge difference, as handling of both is quite
healthy.
Greta game anyway !
