I was just reminded why I don't race VROC very often. I just ran two races.
The first was at Zandy(13lap race, I think). No time for qual, so I started
from the back. I avoided the normal turn 1 bs, and was in 3rd place after half
a lap. 4th place was catching me(he made up 20+seconds in about 7 laps. I
spun off the track and handed over 3rd place, but he later discoed. The only
person I beat was someone who admitted he had about 20 spins...
Race 2 - Watkins Glen(33 laps). I qualified 3rd, and pretty much STAYED there.
Everyone but the top 3 dropped out, so I was the last runner. I was also
losing 2-3 seconds a lap to *2nd* place. When I was about to get lapped, I
threw it off the track in the Loop, and flipped over. At that point, I gave
up. I quit with about 15 laps to go. This is what's wrong with Vroc racing.
If you don't have someone your skill level to race with, it's pretty
<expletive> BORING. I think that out of both of those races, I had another car
in sight for 2-3 laps total. I lost the leaders at WG in the FIRST lap... The
leader in both races was a guy named Mark Rowe, I think. He ran 1:26 at Zandy,
and 1:05 at WG, both with a *stock* Cooper. My PB is about 3 seconds slower at
both tracks, and I was using a Brabham in the races. Why bother? No challenge
- no fun... :(

I'm around your speed in the GPLRanks; my recommendation:
Try the new FG (F1 cars with F3 engines) using the new engine patch. Makes
for very close racing without the carnage and virtually eliminates off-track
excursions. Anything but boring. The hotlappers may be faster but not out of
sight, and if they miss an apex or clip a hedge, you can keep up. It's worth
trying...

Very true. Allthough I have pretty much fun with VROC races, nothing
beats driving in a league where you know how the other driver's
driving style. Right now I'm in a league where I consider myself in
the middle of the pack, I often qualify 6th or 7th.
We don't use shift-R, and this leads to some challenging races I can
assure you :)

I'm still new to the experience of online racing which means I still
get a kick out of the novelty aspect. Still, I can already recognize
the problems you are desribing,- I've had quite a few races (mainly
Monza) where I finished 2nd to 4th primarily by virtue of finishing.
Usually 0-2 guys were slower.
However, racing in the VROC-F2 club is an entirely different
experience. Apart from being practically jerk-free these pickup races
have a 50-75% completion percentage with retirements usually being due
to genuine disco's or severe frustration. In my experience you will
find people ahead of you or behind you during at least half the race.
(In my case, it's usually Glen Field. :-) )
I know that you're a member, so please use the club.
Cheers,
Jens

Hey Eldred, we have a Brabham available in IGPS - if you want it, you
have 12 hours to claim it (6pm eastern time). We're 6 races into the
season, but you'll automatically get 500 points if you join up now. That
will put you well within striking distance of at least a top-5 finish if
you can hold it together. We have good drivers of all skill levels...

Which is a good idea, except that I have yet to see a league that will let
you race whenever you like as VROC does. Many people (like me) don't keep a
regular schedule, and in any case don't want their races to be restricted
to one a week or so. The *last* thing we need is even fewer drivers in the
VROC pickup races.

I was in two league, COBRHA and GPLe Mans. I quit GPLe Mans because I was so
uncompetitive I was just in the way. That, and 3 disco's out of the first 6
races didn't help any...
Cobrha, I had *one* good race - Silverstone, 3rd. I also had a 5th and a 6th.
All the rest were in the bottom 10... :(
There's only ONE guy I can beat if everyone stays connected. Everyone else is
much faster than I am - even in the LITES series..

track. If somebody got a lead, he just waited for the other. Not "racing" as
such, but lots of fun nonetheless.
If you get somebody with similar abilities and a good attitude this can
really be fun.

Dale Farmer (Mosport and Zandy, Dale doing a LOT of waiting :)

Hehe - thanks, but I don't get home on Monday nights in time to run in the

league races. No league (that I'm aware of) requires you to attend
all races. Isn't *some* high quality racing better than none at all?
And with leagues around the world, I'm sure you could find one racing
at 3am your time, if that's convenient to your schedule.
3. If you run in a league, nothing says that its the *only* time
you race. It's only the *best* racing of the week. I run pickups on
VROC for practice and amusement, even more heavily when my league is
running (GPLWS is between seasons now).
You have three choices, as I see it. Run against the AI anytime
you like (boring). Run VROC pickup races at your convenience, with
the highs and lows of random (need I stress that word? :) human

Or try to make some league races where you'll find human competitors

IOW, at least give it a try, David. Then tell us how terrible it
