Seeing as I have heard glowing recommendations for these new FD cars (F1
Chassis with F2 Engine), I thought I would give them a go. I chose a novice
AI race at Monaco for my trial outing.
My first pleasent surprise was that I know had the GP cars sounds instead of
the monotonous F2 sound. I just used a fairly standard F1 setup and though
the gearing was a bit out i was soon beating my current F2 times.
I started the race from fourth on the grid and due to the added grip i was
able to avoid what would have been a unavoidable accident at St Devote.
Racing the AI is 1000% better in FD than F2, you can make far more daring
overtaking moves as the car is alot better balanced. You can also touch the
other cars without automatically being spun round, which is what usually
happens with a F2. Of course my race was effectively ended by the chicane
which unfortunatly is still the same width:-)
I was very sceptical about the engine swapper and I don't see myself
swapping the F1 engines backwards and forwards. The FD cars though IMO are
a fantastic enhancement to GPL. I think it will allow closer, safer on-line
racing aswell as maybe converting a few drivers who maybe didn't get any
further with GPL then a brief inspection before deciding it was too
difficult. Though FD does make it easier to keep the car on the road, it
leaves the physics engine intact and I'm sure to be really quick will take
the same practice and determination as the present classes.

You do it using Paul Thurston's new "engine swapper" utility (see elsewhere
in this ng for URL). You'll also find FG (F1 cars with F3 engines).
One more thing to add to the GPL faq...
