Notable threadRpyToLP replay-to-AI-line converter released for GPL

Martin Granberg announced the release of Nigel Pattinson's RpyToLp tool, which converts GPL replays into AI line files. Users experimented with it and got mixed results, and Pattinson explained that it is most useful for building AI on new tracks and needs manual editing to work well. Guides from Jan Kohl and the GPLEA's Ed Solheim were mentioned, and Goy Larsen dismissed talk of a 'secret GPL society'.

With this tool you can convert a replay file to an lp file. This means that when you race against the AI, the AI will follow the same lines/braking points etc as in the replay file. For example, I still think the AI is braking a little bit too late before the Parabolica, even after the 1.2 patch (in 1.0 the braking point was even later!) I drive a lap in which I brake at the point where I want the AI to brake also. I convert the replay to an lp file, and if things work out the AI has the same driving style as me. You could also convert a replay file from Huttu for example, and drive against 20 Huttu's, or convert a replay file from Eldred, and then you can finally win from the AI :)) At least, this is what I expect an rpy->lp converter to do, I still have to test it :) Andre

That sounds like a great tool Will it work with replays with more than one car??? For example full online race replay?? OK, so now I got this .lp file. Would I then put it the track folder for that replay? For example if I converted a replay from Monza I would put it in SIERRA\gpl\tracks\monza? Now all the AI will brake and follow the line of the converted file? Thanks, Chris G. Hmmmm; just used it to create a new race.lp file at Kyalami from a 1.19 lap of mine and fired up a race. I sat in the pits and watched practice while Jim Clark set pole with a blistering 3.31(!). I assumed that when using a hotlap replay to set AI behavior, I only needed to change the race.lp file, but perhaps I'm missing something. Suggestions? TIA, Steve B. Aren't there 2 .lp files? Min and max or something? How does this relate, is it min AND max? (what are they exactly anyway, sideway escapes for overtaking?) It's most useful for new tracks - creating AI is no fun without something like this to start from. To improve on other LP files you really have to know what you're doing and be prepared to manually edit the LP files that RpyToLp produces. Part of the reason for the delayed release of RpyToLp was that I was hoping to be able to produce LP files that required little or no editing, but I fell well short of that aim. At some stage I'll hopefully take another crack at it, but at the moment there's too many other things to do. Cheers Nigel

It will take some experimenting before I will be fully able to use it, but I'm sure the release of this tool will lead to some improved AI, especially for the converted tracks. Even more, I simply would like to thank you for releasing a 'development' tool to the public. A tool like this can only lead to positive results, and I'm glad you chose to release it to the public, instead of keeping it within the 'secret GPL society'. Thanks. Andre >Cheers >Nigel > > >

Ed, there is a guide on http://www.theuspits.com, under stockcars->editors. I tried to make an AI for Sears Point. The AI behave like total morons now, so I've got quite some experimenting to do. The readme file says that rpy->lp has not been tested with the converted tracks. So I thought that maybe the AI didn't work right because it was a converted track. So now I started working on an AI for Monza. Now the AI behave like total morons on Monza too... maybe I shouldn't have used my own replays <g> Did anybody allready have success with the tool? Did anybody create a good working AI with it for a converted track? Andre > >Ed_ >The GPLEA > >

The problems I was talking about will prevent it creating the lp files. The moronic behaviour is therefore caused by a combination of your moronic driving and my moronic program :) It is difficult to produce good AI. Try to follow Jan's advice, and Ed's when he has it posted. Other people have more experience doing this than me, but I found it was particularly important to keep the line of the race lp within the boundaries formed by the min/maxrace lps. Otherwise the AI goes into panic mode, which is not good. Rather similar to what I do, come to think of it. Cheers Nigel

Thanks for the tip, this could very well be the cause of my problems. I'll give it another try tonight, making sure the race lp line will not cross the min/max lines. Thanks. Andre

I'm talking about a guide for GPL AI's Jan... Which is what I presume Andre is planning to use RPY2LP. I started working on a guide last week - without the knowledge about RPY2LP "going public" this soon... So most of the stuff is done... I just need to add a few tips and explainations to it. I wonder if some of them might be with Papyrus. If a track creater from the original GPL makes a new track, to release it they would probably need Sierra's permission, and might not get it. If they don't tell Sierra and release under an alias, what could Sierra do about it? About a "secret GPL society"; There is some info about file formats on the web. But for the real nitty gritty a would be track maker would probably have to show some commitment and good character, first. Think about the ramifications of an easy to use editor that allowed just anyone to make subtle changes in track surface friction or turn camber with just a mouse click. Also, hoarding hard earned secrets is nothing new. Instrument makers, artists, athletes, etc all do it and pass the knowledge on to a select few. Tom

It was actually a rhetorical question on my part Tom :-) There is no "secret GPL society", the person who originally talked about this, not Andre, just likes to cause a fuss about things every now and then, unfortunately not everyone knows him well enough to see that I guess..... Ah, what I meant was that I had updated my guide to include GPL tracks... ;] Cheers! -- Jan Kohl SECURITY CONSULTANT The Pits - http://www.theuspits.com Castle Graphics - http://www.castlegraphics.com "Ed Solheim" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:T8706.946$[email hidden]... > I'm talking about a guide for GPL AI's Jan...
