Hello,
Now that 3dfx is finished-off (I've had voodoo-1/2/3's, know nothing
about Geforces), sooner or later I'll have to get a new vid-card.
I currently have a CeleronII-600@900Mzh, with a voodoo-3.
First, how much does a decent Nvidea card cost (Geforce2 the best
brand ?) ?
Second, running at 900MHz, how would a Geforce-2 compare to a
Voodoo-3?
With the voodoo-3 I see some slowdown in GPL, but only at
race-starts (i.e, behind 15+ A/I cars). Would the Geforce-2 (with D3D
driver) show worse performance than the voodoo, in the same situation?
Also, a generic type question. For other games, could the voodoo-3 be
"choking" on graphics, with a CPU running at 900MHz? I see some fairly
large slowdowns in a huge battle, in games like Red-Alert-2, TA, etc.
Just wondering if the CPU is fast enough, and if the voodoo-3 can't
handle the graphics.
Would a Geforce-2 outperform the Voodoo-3 in most D3D games/sims,
with a 900MHz CPU? (900MHz was quite fast 4 months ago, but not now).
Thanks, Matt

Matt,
I may be able to help you with this. I also run a Cel600 @900 with a
V3 3000 (for GPL only) and have just bought a GeForce MX for my daughter's
PIII700 ( mainly for the very comparison you're thinking about). Last night
I ran various tests with the MX and found some interesting results. At
1024x768 (the res that I normally run GPL at) and at 1280 x 1024, the
framerate was much the same as the V3, except at racestart (with 19 AI) when
it dropped to a low of 28-30 as opposed to 33-36 with the V3. Now since this
was the same at both resolutions, and from previous experience with
different CPUs in GPL, I suspect this result may be caused by the "slow" 700
processor. With 2x2 antialiasing enabled on the MX, racestarts dropped to
around 22-24 fps and the max with no other cars around was 32-33.
Interestingly this was the same at 1024 and 1280. The image quality with
fsaa was noticeably "less jaggy" than without, but doesn't look as sharp as
on the V3. However the removal of the jaggies is a big plus. The monitor on
my daughter's P.C. isn't as sharp as mine, so I'll reserve judgement on
image quality until I change monitors and compare.
Bear in mind that this is with the MX version of the GeForceII card, so the
GTS version "should" give better performance. I think I'll probably bite the
bullet and put the MX in my 900, with the good monitor, and really see how
it looks.
I'll keep you posted if your interested?
Cheers..
Phillip...
p.s. Can't get Midtown Madness (1) to run correctly on the GeForce. The sky
is full of buildings! Have tried various drivers to no avail. Midtown 2 runs
fine, so I guess it's no big deal.

VisionTek Geforce2 64 meg card. Running GPL with the D3D patch is
incredible on the Geforce. I run it with 4x4 FSAA at 1280x1024 and it
is absolutely gorgeous--and the frame rates are comparable to the ones
I was getting at 1024x780 on my V3--and the visual quality is better--
with higher resolution mirrors--and of course, the awesome FSAA. Got
mine on ebay for $210. Since my machine is comparable to yours--I can
strongly recommend the Geforce2. Have no experience with the Geforce2
MX--

the GTS 64 does great in higher resolutions
the MX dies past 960x720
1024 is pretty much dead
FSAA is a joke on the MX
if you're going to get an nvidia card, get a full blown GTS

Thanks for this info! With GPL, I'd never have thought a Geforce 2
(well, a 32mb Geforce) could out-perform a Voodoo-3, running
CeleronII-600@900MHz. Sounds like a 64mb model does just fine though!
