Hi,
Over the holidays I may have a spare network hub and a buddy who wants
to race GPL online. If his DSL line and each of our computers is
plugged into the hub, is it possible to get both of us onto VROC or
into a multi-player race? If he joins a race will my computer
automatically be able to join? I'm guessing that once he's connected,
when I got to multi-player and try to join a race either his ip address
that we set up for the hub or the on-line ip address he's connected to
will show up as available on my connect screen. Has anybody done this
type of thing?
Thanks,

Hi Chris,
Just plugging your 2 PC's into the hub will not work unless you've
purchased a 2nd IP address. For you both to connect/race on the
internet, one machine will need 2 ethernet cards. The DSL modem would
plug into 1 card and the hub into the other. The 2nd PC would connect
to the hub as well.
If you want to join other races on VROC, you need some software on the
machine that the DSL is attached to in order to route the packets:
sygate, wingate?
The main PC could host races and you just join from the LAN segment <--
This will work with no fiddling :-)
See diagram:

Just host races on PC1 and make sure both ports allow connections to the
server. Furthermore, the [ Communications ] core.ini entry has
allow-alternate-ip-thingy set for DSL to be seen on PC1. The readme
files have the details -- search for the word "lookup".
Have fun!
Jason.

A friend and I do just that at his
house with Nascar 3 on his LAN
using ISC (Internet connection sharing), We both
connect to races independently
through the same connection. I'm afraid I cant
fill you in on how it's done
as its his set-up, but I'm sure some of the more
technically minded hear will be
able to fill you in on the details, but it's
definitely possible as long as your friend's
got the bandwidth to cope.

will work. If you didn't have a hub, you could purchase a null-ethernet
cable and just hook up PC-to-PC. Okay, that's more than you wanted.

my buddy's network card is also connected to the network hub. We both have
shared internet access that works just fine without the need to purchase a

just fine for us, but then we are using a DSL router and not a DSL modem,
perhaps that is the difference.

I hope you are meaning this to be a joke as you have a Router and
Jason is describing how to make a software router with a computer.
Either way you need a router. The Linksys Router for ~$160 will allow
for what he wants to do, but then again would you do this for a one
time thing?
Myself I would call and get a second IP for the next month.

Your forgetting the simplest version of my solution, was to get a 2nd
ethernet card and host your own races on VROC using PC1. This would
prevent the need for any routing or software.
Jason.

poster (Chris Calvin) is trying to do. But he said he had a spare network
hub that he wants to hook two computers into, then also hook DSL into the
hub so both computers will have online access (i.e. he would not have to
purchase a $160 Linksys hub as you suggest). He asked if this would work.
I said yes. It seems to work fine for me <shrug>.
