Full GPL on German PC Action cover CD

Michael Staab reported that the full version of Grand Prix Legends would appear on the cover CD of the German magazine PC Action in January 2001, possibly tripling the game's player base. Others doubted many casual readers would stick with it. Steve Smith noted that the budget Sierra re-release shipped unpatched and without his book, though another poster said a PDF of it was on the Classic CD.

Hi there, GPL Full Version will be included on the Cover-CD-Rom of the german Mag "PC Action" 02/2001, which will hit the newsstands in Germany on the 17th. of January. Given that GPL only sold 40.000 Copies ( including 2 to me ) this will raise the count of sold GPL-Copies around 300%, because PCA sells about 120.000 Copies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Hmm, I hope that they are smart enough to include the D3D Patch on the CD-Rom and Links to the best GPL-Fansites... But why do I feel a bit sad seeing GPL being sold so cheap ? And as an American, I look forward to Germany losing a few places on GPL Rank over this. :-)

I saw it here in the states at an Office Depot (not even a game software store) for $5 US.

I doubt that the release on the cover disk will have an influence on the player base. Those who cared already got it and the rest will be put off by the difficulty, especially since the magazine in question is more aimed at the casual player. But then, any press is better than no press. :) Jan
Hi Michael, When Sierra re-released GPL as a "classic" (i.e., in the remaindered bin...without a box and WITHOUT MY BOOK), the game on the CD wasn't patched. Duh! (They did include 1.2.0.1 on the CD, but it was up to the FDU to find it and apply it.) P.S. I still get questions almost daily from newbies looking to join the game, so there might still be hope. --Steve Michael Staab <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:91qaqu$50e85$[email hidden]... > Hi there, > > GPL Full Version will be included on the Cover-CD-Rom of the german Mag"PC > Action" 02/2001, which will hit the newsstands in Germany on the 17th. of > January. > > Given that GPL only sold 40.000 Copies ( including 2 to me ) this willraise

Then we could d/l them from websites, but couldn't have them on the front of magazines. Now it seems even that's crumbling (there's a [bad, sadly] full game called "Excessive Speed" on a UK mag this month). And IMO, about bloody time. We've had full versions of utilities on coverdiscs for ages, and it hasn't done those companies any harm, so there was no excuse for the "ban" on games being distributed this way. Now, all we need is for someone to stick N4 on a UK cover CD... :-) -- David. Not in Germany, they've been putting full version games on their disks since about three years, at high times you even got two or three games on one magazine! Sounds like it :-( I thought copyright laws were supposed to have been standardised throughout the EU, so maybe that's why they've started doing it even here now. OTOH, there are differences between UK and German law - you have much stricter laws about "violent" games, for example. My version of MS Combat Flight Sim is licensed for sale all over the EU - except Germany. -- David. Well in the case of CFS it's probably not for graphical violence but because of Nazi content (swastikas etc). Jan
This is one area where EA really excels -- I had to re-purchase SCGT after giving my original copy to a friend, so I picked up a copy as one of EA's "CD-ROM Classics" and I was VERY pleased to find that the disk included a nice web-based front-end for installation, which also allowed me to directly install the 1.551 patch and several additional cars, I believe. They didn't include the ADVOPT patch, I don't think, but that wasn't an "official" EA utility, so they may not have had the legal rights to distribute it. At any rate, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had purchased a nicely-patched re-release, and not just a re-pressing of the original release. Other game companies should take note. -- JB F1CS2K Rank 100.668 http://f1cs2krank.dhs.org/ In article <K_706.39883$[email hidden]>, "Stephen Smith" <[email hidden]> wrote: > Hi Michael, > > When Sierra re-released GPL as a "classic" (i.e., in the remaindered > bin...without a box and WITHOUT MY BOOK), the game on the CD wasn'tpatched. > Duh! Ah, OK. That makes sense. Presumably that was the reason that Spirit of Speed [may it rot in peace] had that rather odd "bear" flag for the German cars, rather than the real 1937 flag - because Microprose thought they might sell one or two copies in Germany. -- David. Is the manual/user guide also available as a PDF? For some reason, my copy of GPL (bought as full priced, boxed version) only has the excellent Steve Smith book. If a PDF of the missing bit exists, I'd appreciate a copy.
