Ok guys, how many of you are having what you would call a "really good
experience" racing N4 on a consistent basis?
I've had maybe 1 out of 5 races where cars don't start just disappearing.
How does this compare to GPL? I had a much better time with N3 and
especially with N2 on TEN. Is it the new 3D aspect, or is it just because
it's beta and the network code isn't finished? Or are they just shooting for
DSL, and assume we'll just upgrade for that if we really care? I assume it's
the beat code.
Also what really bugs me is that cars seem to flip over in odd ways every
they touch. again I hope this is due to incomplete network code.
I'm not complaining, but just sharing the experiences I've had, I'm sure
papy is trying their hardest to provide the best multiplayer possible, since
this has been one of their staples for years, but perhaps the technology
just isn't there to support such a dynamic sim on a slow dialup.
I have a:
Dell P2 450
128 MB RAM
16MB Graphics card (TNT1)
and a USRobotics (do they really do robots too?) WINmodem v.90
I usually get above 30 fps, but I sometimes drop into the mid 20's at
certain points, running at 800x600x16 D3D 50% detail, low mirrors,m some
trackside. could my winmodem be running out of system resources when the
framerate is dropping?
questions and comments in one post... :)
Don't forget this is a demo and not the final product. I am sure every
aspect of the game is fine tuned during this period of time before the game
goes gold.

It's been pretty awesome for me. Much better than N3 especially at Dover.
Dover was pretty horrible in N3 with that wall warp.
I think people who have a poor experience are either running on a bad
server, have a bad machine, or just forget how bad the online N3 code was.
Remember, we couldn't really even race at Charlotte, Texas, or Dover no
matter what the connection was like. I've been right on the ass of a car at
Dover online in N4 for 60 laps. That just wasn't possible in N3.
In your case I think your machine is a big problem. You really need better
than a 450 for N4 and a much better graphics card. I have both a PIII 800
with a GeForce card and a 400 with a V3 card. The difference between the
machines is absolutely amazing. On the 800 the game looks almost real, on
the 400 it looks like and runs like crap.
I do have DSL so I can't comment on the modem thing. They only send you the
data around you unlike Heat so it should work okay with a modem if you have
a good machine. Make sure you turn down the cars around you in the graphics
options.
I totally agree about the flying cars. The collision code needs to be toned
down. I hope they fix that, but I kind of doubt they will.
My two cents anyway.

far. At first it seemed that there were a few servers up on 56K trying to
host 15 racers, but they have dropped out and now the quality of the servers
is impressive. I raced with about 15 on Fixit's server the other night and
it was beautifully smooth. He's on Fiber DSL in Atlanta and I'm in Fort
Myers pinging about 95. I also raced on Brian Cook's server with very good
results. Last night I got my first taste of Tom Oliver's server - drivers
that are actually considerate of each other - what a concept! As with the
other two servers, Tom's was smooth as a LAN for me and was a great
experience.
It probaby doesn't hurt that I'm on ADSL as well - just the 512/128 flavor
though, so I'm not really a great host, just the perfect client...

450 would be causing the lag, for me the looks really don't matter, so I'm
running at 800x600...
One thing I can say, is that Nascar Heat looked and ran MUCH better on my
computer than N4, I get all kinds of nice reflections and deep colors in NH,
but in N4, it seems to be optimized for higher end systems opposed to lower
end.
anyways, I'm not going to upgraded now, I'll wait until N4 is actually
released, allthrough I'm really shooting to upgrade for WSC.
