I just wanted to take a moment and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and/or a
Happy Holiday Season!
Travel safe and best wishes!

And the same to you!
(Why do Americans say "Happy Holidays", anyway? Why not just say "Merry
Christmas" and have done with it, like in the UK? I can't imagine anyone,
of whatever religion, being *offended* by it...!)

And same from me, too! Hope you all enjoy this time - I have so far,

should all be about.

A (Native) American friend told me that it's because of PC gone mad.
Say "Merry Christmas" and you'll piss off the all the other religious
groups celebrating at the same time, Kwanzaa, Hannukah <sp?> etc.
etc.. PC Gone mad, yet again. I mean, I can understand the point, but
really - it's someone wishing you well, take it as that and don't be
so freakin' uptight.
Incidently, this native american girl only calls herself "Native
American" so people on the net can tell she's not from the
subcontinent - she doesn't care, only calling her squaw (it actually
means vagina) will get any reaction out of her, vis-a-viz racial
stuff.

I'm a "Native American" too, I was born in Baltimore.

They came from Asia Via the Bering Straits Ice Bridge. At least this is one
theory. So to claim indegiony(new word) may not be correct, but they did
get there first so the claim of first come first serve seems to apply.

Possibly. Or possibly not. Have a look on the search engines for "Kennewick
man"... human remains discovered with marked European caucasoid
characteristics, dated to the 8th millennium BC; unfortunately, a court
ruled that the tribes who claimed him as their own[1] had priority over a
scintific investigation, and could take him away for burial. Some of the
sillier people had an argument along the lines of: "he was found in our
burial grounds, and our traditions say we were the original peoples, so he
must by definition be one of ours", which is analogous to Galileo's
opponents refusing to look through his telescope because Jupiter's
satellites weren't mentioned in Aristotle, so couldn't be there - a quite
ludicrous argument.
[1] which he almost certainly wasn't - unfortunately, some American courts
seem particularly prone to putting religion above science.

Oh really, what a load of stupid codswallop. I live in the West Midlands,
one of the most ethnically, racially and religiously mixed areas of the UK;
and we don't get all uptight when a Hindu wishes a Christian a Happy
Diwali, or when an atheist wishes a Muslim a happy Eid. Not so long ago I
was sitting in a station waiting room, chatting to a Sikh man - full
turban, long beard, ceremonial dagger, the lot - and his last words to me
as we went out to get the train were "Have a good Christmas". Those
Americans (I hope a small minority) who have this silly attitude need to
grow up.
"Native American" is a tricky one, actually - I never know what to do
there. "Red Indian" is obviously not on; "Indian" on its own is inaccurate,
and unclear unless in context; ditto "American Indian". The linguistic word
for the language group is "Amerindian", but that looks contrived. "Indian
American" presumably refers to people of Indian (as in India) descent. And
the individual tribal names aren't useful for general use. And to
complicate everything, many people are reclaiming "Indian" for themselves,
rather in the manner of the word "queer".
