I got a Microsoft Sidewinder force feedback wheel (USB) and we can't get
the force feedback to work. I'm running Directx7a and Windows sees the
wheel in the control panel and it works fine all except for the FF. If I
go to Game Controllers and click on Properties and the Forces tab I get "an
unknown problem occurred while trying to initialize force feedback . . ."
message.
I checked the MS site for updates but there are none for the version 4.0
Sidewinder Game Control Software. Any ideas as to what's wrong? Did I get
a bad wheel?

Do you have another controller connected ? Or a USB mouse, perhaps ? Is
there an older version of the Controller software still on your system from
a previous pad or wheel ? If so, remove it thoroughly before installing
v4.0.
I don't think you have a bad wheel.
Well I did a search on deja.com and found that by changing the driver from
MS FF wheel to an HIB(?) driver and then switching back to the MS driver
fixed the problem. Pretty damn strange if you ask me.

PC's are strange beasts, indeed.
Glad you sorted it out.
