GP-length VROC race at Zandvoort
EldredP hosted the planned Grand Prix-length GPL race at Zandvoort on 26 December 2000. Participants traded race reports, including blown engines, fuel shortages, a punt by John Simmons, and Jens Kruuse's result. They discussed setups and scheduling another race.

Allthough I thought the race was at 11:00 EST which makes 5pm here.
But 12:00EST (6pmCET) is also no prob.

Ok - you made it :)
First time in my life I used a Cooper at Zandy. It driver really nice,
much more stable than a Lotus.
B-U-T: After 8 laps I blew up my engine :((
I drive GP length races offline regular, so I think I know how to
drive conservative. My racetimes were 2 seconds below qualifying time
so I was really driving conservative during the beginning.
Short-shifting, not full speed at the s/f, etc.
Yet after 8 laps big black clouds were comming from my engine :(
Is the Cooper even more unstable than the Lotus or was I using a
completely wrong setup?

Thanks for the race Eldred! I was in 8th on lap 32 I think, saw a line of
text that the 7th place driver had dropped out, said "Yes!", promptly lost
focus approaching the hairpin, onto the berm and flipped.

Jan,
You are awfully casual with *MY* Miss Tulips! :-)
Checking the replay with Replay Analyser, I realized that I had problems
with my suspensions:
Lap 15: minor problems with left front suspension
medium problems with left rear suspension.
Lap 21: minor problems with right rear suspension.
Lap 44: medium problems with right rear suspension.
Lap 45: severe problems with left front suspension.
Lap 70: severe problems with left rear suspension.
Lap 73: severe problems with right rear suspension.
Who needs more that the right front? :-)
Cheers,
Jens

Uh...a forced pitstop. I knew I couldn't catch Jan or the leader(didn't

If you have a server replay, I'd appreciate it if you'd put it up for
download somewhere... the start and the first couple of laps with the full
field must be awesome to watch. Looking forward to your race report as well.
Good show anyway Eldred, you lasted at least 16 laps longer than a lot of
people with negative GPLRanks and a lot longer than your own appreciation of
your skills would lead one to believe. Maybe you should start "talking the
talk and walking the walk" a little. Confidence breeds success, you know.

The start was amazingly good, no crashes in the beginning afaik.
Everybody took it really easy in the beginning... except for that
Ferrari behind me. He often got so close that I was affraid he would
punt me. Yet with 10 drivers in front of me there was not much I could
do to avoid him. Luckily nothing happened.
When the race really started after the first 2 laps I actually had a
good race with that Ferrari. I could keep him behind me easily, except
at the straight. My gearing was wrong I think, way before the end of
the haybails my engine was allready overrevving. I didn;t want to
force my engine so I didn't drive full speed at the s/f.
So eveytime at the s/f the Ferrari allmost overtook me, I won a little
distance during the rest of the lap, and at the next s/f he got close
to me again. This happened lap after lap untill the 8th lap, where I
did blow up my engine :(

Luckily? I suppose a bit of luck was involved. On lap 1 it was a very
aggressive J. Simmons who actually passed me on that short straight
after Tarzan! He then passed you on the s/f straight at the start of lap

I got really close twice in Tarzan, but both times I stepped hard on the
brakes and went wide to prevent a collision. Fortunately, I did.
When you left the race trailing lots of smoke (very dramatic) I had just
started concentrating hard on overtaking you a lap before. You know,
trying to keep the gap closed on the twisty bits. And I think I might
have been able to do so as my laptimes were coming down but who knows?
Having a car in front of you is very good for concentration.
Cheers,
Jens, who would like to try again.

John, I'm not sure, but I believe it was you in a Ferrari who was
driving behind me (Cooper, pink helmet, lots of black smoke at lap nr.
8 :) and especially during the first 2 laps I thought you were going
to punt me for a couple of times. I couldn't drive faster since there
was a whole bunch of cars in front of me, and I'm not going to try to
pass other cars during the first laps of a full GP distance race.
Following another car close is an art in it's own and I admit very
difficult sometimes. Couple of weeks ago I had a league race at
Solitude and I was driving behind a Ferrari which drove much slower
than me (hi Olav :) I thought I was keeping enough distance, yet he
surprised me a couple of times by braking sooner than I expected.
So I kept even more distance, but now I couldn't pass him at the
straights.
I think the best thing you can do with a slower driver in front of you
is to keep distance from him, watch him for a lap to see where you can
pass him safely, and on the next lap, get close to him when you're
just before the point where you want to overtake him.
At Zandy yesterday for example, it would have been safest to keep
distance at the whole track, speed up at the last couple of corners so
you could overtake Eldred at the s/f line safely (the only safe
overtaking point at Zandy).
I realized this myself (again) when I had an online race at the Ring
yesterday, and I tried to overtake someone at one of the most
dangerous corners of the Ring, the left hander after the long
straight. I caused the other guy to crash :(

Ah, so it was John who was behind me the first 2 laps and then you..
Edlred, please upload the replay, I'd love to see it :)
Jens, only minutes before the race the use of Coopers was suggested.
I had never driven a Cooper at Zandy (I drive Cooper hardly at all)
and I had no setup. I used the default setup, made some quick changes,
only had time for a couple of practice runs.
After the first lap of the race I noticed that my gearing was wrong.
The engine was overrevving at the s/f line. I was affraid to blow up
my engine so I really backed off, never drove full speed.
I thought it was quite funny, at the s/f line you drove full speed,
got -really- close to me, during the rest of the lap I could gain some
distance, and at the next s/f point you were there again :)
I still had to get used to the car, so I planned to drive easy for the
first 20 laps, and keep you behind me in this way.
But alas, I still blew my engine :((
Next race at the Ring I have no problems if we take another car, but
we really should agree on which cars should be used way before the
race so I have some time to get used to the car and to build some
stable setups.
Anyway, congrats with your great victory :)

The incident with John was the only one in the entire race for me, and
it was frightfully obvious for 2 laps that with that hanging on the ass
behaviour I would get punted soon, and that's just what happened, ten
minutes into a 2hour race just before the hairpin when he had no chance at a
pass. It took me 20 laps to work my way back up to 30s behind him, it was
his running out of gas that made me laugh with pleasure lose focus and crash
:)
And apology accepted John. I just wish I'd gotten one *during the race*
when it mattered.

Yes, that's exactly what I was getting at. I don't think I was particularly
carefull with my engine in the race, so it's almost got to be setup.
Shall I mail mine to you?
Jan.

I *told* you and Jan that you didn't have to use the Coopers... You could have
chosen your preferred car.

I remember seeing the 'out of gas' message. I didn't even realize you were IN
the race. Too bad your crew chief shirked his duties... :(

Yes please :)
I also hope Eldred saved the replay, I'd also like to compare your
driving with mine, especially after you wrote you were not driving
extra carefull with the engine..

I practice the art whenever I can and I rarely punt anyone. I like to
apply pressure (I think Earnhardt calls it "rattling your cage" - grin).

The really embarassing part is that I wasn't trying to pass you. Either
you slowed more than I expected or I was carrying too much speed into
that corner and we had a coming together. I suspect that the only reason
I was able to keep up is that I diodn't have the same fuel load you did.
:-)
Next race (I hope it's someplace like Rouen or Silverstone), we'll have
to try again. :-)

I think I should tell you guys that I don't drive in-car, so unless
you're REALLY close, I won't get nervous. I can pretty much tell when
someone is really close before the nose of their car pokes into the
screen, and I'll usually concede the spot on a sufficiently safe section
of track (straight). :-)
At the same time, I'm gonna stay as close as possible to the guy in front
- I find it quite fun to follow as closely as I can without wrecking one
or both drivers. I'm aggressive when I can be, but (usually) know better
than to try a stupid passing move.
