Today Eldred Pickett hosted the first (annual?) Boxing Day Online (GPL) GP.
The race was held at Zandvoort and attracted a full field of starters. After
a couple of very disciplined opening laps a steady pattern of retirements,
through accident or connection, was observed. With about 30 laps left there
were only 3 drivers left: Jens Kruuse led by 36 seconds from myself, while
I, in turn, had about 50 seconds in hand on host Eldred Pickett.
I think it suddenly occurred to all three of us we could win this, because
the tempo suddenly shot up some. I was trying to keep Jens honest, but
couldn't really relax even if I wanted to because Eldred was steadlily
gaining eventhough I was at full chat trying to get back onto terms with
Jens. Unfortunately, with 19 to go, Eldred retired.
Maybe Jens was distracted by the disconnection message as he made a couple
of unforced errors around that time allowing me to close to within 10
seconds with 10 to go. By now Don McCorkle was the only spectator left. He
got his money's worth however as Jens regained his composure and held on to
stop a late charge by myself and win by a margin of 0.74s. Don, I appreciate
you hanging on to congratulate the finishers home. Thanks.
Congratulations are in order for Jens as well. Not only did he complete the
distance to win, but he did so while being under great pressure in the final
laps, while I effectively had nothing to lose. I don't know about Jens, but
I was absolutely flat out for those last 15 laps. Both of us were shaking
when we got back to the paddock.
Congratulations to Eldred as well, not only for hanging on as long as he
did, but also for hosting such a successfull event. I said "annual"
earlier... but come to think of it, why wait a whole year to have another
one? <g>

Jens Kruuse wins Boxing Day GP-length GPL race
Jan Verschueren reported on EldredP's first Boxing Day online GPL Grand Prix at Zandvoort, which Jens Kruuse won after a field shrunk by accidents and disconnections. Participants congratulated each other and planned a follow-up full-distance race at the Nurburgring, debating whether anyone could survive it. Dave Henrie noted NASCAR 4's ability to rejoin a race after disconnecting as important for endurance racing.

Thank you Jan. We had a great race. You were behind me on the board
almost all the way.
You were pretty much right on the money about your summery. What also
forced a few errors was a sore b***, sweat in my eyes, and thinking way
too much about the victory. We were going pretty fast the last laps and
were actually quite consistent considering the pressure :-)
I was glad to see you finish the race in retrospect though I did throw a
few curses your way when the gap became 2-3 seconds with about 7 or so
to go. I'm sure you did the same to me. ;-)
I'm really looking forward to the next one (Eldred?). The longest race I
had been in before this one, was 21 laps on Monza w/ reset available.

Yep, thanks and congratulations for Eldred and Jens as well as the rest
of the finishers. It was a fun race even though I discoed from the 3rd
place after about 30 laps :/ It seemed pretty clean overall at least
from my point of view, but apparently there were some incidents.
I'll definitely try to join future races of this sort if my connection
is up to the task and if my shoulders and legs stay functional
throughout the race. Ow.

My guesses: Pole will be 8:23, fastest race lap 8:32, only 5 cars will
remain after lap 2. NONE will finish the race!

But isn't Le Mans about switching drivers every 2 or so hours? Could be a problem geographically unless you have the new "switch-driver-in-midrace" patch.
Nifty idea, actually. Coders, we have a job for you! A big and

rejoin a race in progress if you get disconected. This is VERY IMPORTANT to
endurance sim racing. Why? I haven't tested it yet...and it would probably
require having a copy of a game cd, which ethically could be a problem, but
if two users had the same cd, the same name, and password, one driver could
THEORETICALLY start the race. After a certain # of laps he could disconnect
himself and icq or instant message his drivng partner. That fellow then,
using the same name etc reconnects and continues on. This has one huge flaw
if you use AI. They won't stop for driver changes. But if all the drivers
are live humans..then the swap over time should just about equal out.
am I off base here?

are slick and the fences murder. You won't get away with a scrape like on
some other tracks, that's for sure.
I know I might not finish, but my point is it's counterproductive to worry
about accidents and/or first lap mayhem. One only has a limited amount of
attention to spend on driving the car and keeping tabs on one's fellow
competitors. Worrying about stuff like that only detracts from the effort
one can spend on keeping it on the black stuff or blowing someone off,
making a mistake easier to make.
I don't advocate ostrich<sp?> politics, but pushing the thought firmly from
one's mind really helps, IMO.
Just tried starting from the back against the AI by way of practise... lost
it in Galgenkopf on lap 12. Quite a gentle knock, but serious enough to
cause a snowball effect and I was out by Aremberg on lap 13. Didn't really
feel like a GP lenght race... maybe that's why I started too
enthousiastically and paid for that in fatigue near the end.

Out of curiosity, what kind of lap times were you doing?
Eldred, of course we can last 15 laps. Easy. Jan says so. And he has
seen us drive. :-) Besides it might be good for our GPLRank, I just
improved by 4/10 at Zandvoort today due to all that practice.

Just out of curiosity, what laptimes were you driving? If I drive the
best I can I drively quite easily around 8:20, but the change that
I'll make a mistake becomes way to big then. I really have to drop to
8:30-8:45 times to drive safe enough to last a GP distance.

That is not to say I won't stuff it in the fence at an earlier time during
the actual race, I'm just not going to start worrying about it. Trouble with
the Ring is you use a lot of fuel each lap, so there is a marked performance
increase from lap to lap. In my case this leads to over enthousiasm and a
lot of "whoa! -nearly lost it there, let's slow it down some".-moments.
Usually I'm disciplined enough to keep myself from taking risks for at least
5 or 6 corners after one of those... <g>

Not many safe places to pass. Best oportunities at the s/f line, the
straight after that one, and the long straight near the end.
For the rest there are not many places where you can pass..
