Sorry if this is 'old news', but I just read that the 3DFX
company has been purchased by rivals NVIDIA... from what was
indicated, Nvidia don't propose to continue development of the
'glide/3dfx' format! Anyone with a Voodoo3/5 will probably
not be able to obtain any later drivers/support (dx8 etc.)!
Anyone have thoughts on this? Esp with GPL being glide
oriented!

Welcome back, how was your holidays on Mars?
"Old news" ... the understatement of the year! :-)

Yep, it is old news. I have to say, even being a GeForce2 owner, it is sad
news. 3DFX offered serious competition to Nvidia, and we the consumers
always benefit in those cases.
As far as GPL, with the unofficial d3d patch, it is gorgeous. Glide is
certainly dying.

D3D patch...! What where can I get this? I must have been in Hyperspace when
that was released... I must be living a sheltered life! I always thought D3D
sucked, perhaps things have moved on....

Go to products, Grand Prix Legends, then downloads. It will be the first one
you see. On my GeForce 2 MX, I think it looks much better than it did with
my V3000 card running in glide.

Hyperspace on the far side of our glaxy. hehe. D3D has gotten a lot better
the past year, year and a half. It's getting to be about on par with OpenGL
depending on how well the game was coded. www.papy.com to get the D3D patch.
It looks sweet on my GeForce2 MX.

nVidia bought 3dfx assets, not the whole company, so 3dfx still exists, is
still responsible for it's own technical support and drivers, and sadly will
probably close shortly. Glide support has been absent from the vast
majority of new games for a long time now, since 3dfx stopped developing
glide several years ago. If 3dfx had survived, their next cards would not
have supported Glide anyway.
This news doesn't affect GPL, or any old Glide game, but it could cause
problems when DX8 games start appearing.
