Installing a Voodoo5 PCI in a Gateway PC

Dan Belcher could not get a Voodoo5 PCI card to display on his Gateway PC. Others explained that the Voodoo5 is a combined 2D/3D card and that his onboard video had to be disabled in the BIOS or with a jumper. Posters also shared tips on finding cheap Voodoo5 cards through price matching.

I've been through Computer Problem Hell today. :( First, Voodoo5 5500 AGP card wouldn't fit. Gateway tech guy was wrong. I don't have an AGP slot. Returned it to Circuit City, got a PCI version. PCI fits. Problem: Monitor won't display anything. My computer came with a Voodoo2 card that had two plugs on the back of the card. One was the normal blue monitor plug and the other was a black plug that connected from the card to the other blue monitor plug on the back of my computer. The Voodoo5 didn't have this connection in the back and therefore I couldn't get it to work. I returned my Voodoo5 card again and got my money back. I then had to reinstall my Voodoo2 card, which was once again a hellish process. It kept asking me for an installation disk, which I DON'T HAVE, etc. etc. I FINALLY managed to get it back going again and updated the drivers. Everything works perfectly fine now, except that the graphics card still sucks. :( Does anybody know how I can get a better graphics card hooked up to my PC? Thanks. ----------------------------------------- Dan Belcher Team Racing Unlimited http://simcrash.00game.com

Aw, man...I didn't understand what you meant earlier... The V5 is a single 2D/3Dcard - you don't NEED another card in the system with it... The Voodoo2 is a 3D only card. The extra plug on the back is a pass-through plug that connects to your 2D card so that they can both get the video signal. The Voodoo5 is both a 2D and 3D card in one. To install it, open up your computer, remove BOTH video cards that are in there, insert the Voodoo5, close everything back up and reboot. Install the drivers and you are home free. Other cards? The Nvidia GeForce 2 GTS/Ultra/MX. Better performance and the company that makes them just bought 3Dfx so what does that tell you? yeah first of all...welcome to Gateway hell. They make a great box..until you want to upgrade it. Now the V5 is a SINGLE card. you don't need the V2. Your monitor will plug right into the back of the V5. You can dload V2 drivers for a while yet at 3dfxgamers.com I don't know how much longer that site will be available since 3dfx sold out to Nvidia. Good luck... dave henrie "Dan Belcher" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > I've been through Computer Problem Hell today. :( First, Voodoo5 5500AGP > card wouldn't fit. In article <[email hidden]>, [email hidden] (Dan Belcher) wrote: > I've been through Computer Problem Hell today. :( First, Voodoo5 > Your problem is that you have to somehow disable your on-board video for the Voodoo 5 PCI to work. It's a true display card, unlike the Voodoo2, which is only for 3D graphics acceleration. Depending on your PC, you may have an option in your BIOS settings to disable the on-board video, or choose PCI as the primary display. You may have to change a switch or jumper setting on the motherboard. Gateway tech support should have told you this, but we all know what most PC tech support is like ;). Good luck - even with all the stuff happening with 3dfx, the Voodoo5 is still a great card, and the best PCI card you can get. BTW - how much were they charging for the card? I've seen posts about mail-order places selling V5's for under $180. HTH! Kendt Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/

You can't see it, it's integrated on the MoBo, which sucks as you've just discovered, but since you were going the V5 route, it doesn't really matter anyway, what you need to do is to see if there's anyway to disable your primary vid card On some computers there's a jumper on the MoBo that does this, on others there's a setting in the BIOS/SETUP that lets you choose the vid card sequence, PCI/AGP or vice versa, obviously you'll want to use the PCI/AGP sequence, and then there are those Comps that does this automatically.... Disable the primary card in System Properties.....it'll still show up....but the PC will still use the V5..... Where was the cable that was going into your V2 card coming from? That is the other video card. If it is attached to your Motherboard, it should be able to be disabled in the bios. -- [email hidden]

Creative has a PCI mx card out, somewhat slower than the agp version though. J. Janasov Greg Cisko <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:kVm26.63060$[email hidden]...

Dan, Post (or e-mail) your Gateway PC model #, and I'll see if I can find info if you have a jumper that disables your on-board video, or maybe we can point you towards exactly what to change in the BIOS setup. Have you tried calling Gateway tech support and just asking the specific question "How do I disable the on-board video?" Kendt Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/

Yep I just did the same thing!!! Pricematched my a price on the internet for $175 at Harmony computers (Onvia does not have it in stock anymore). Staples added my tax for Florida so it came to $185.15. Then with a $30 coupon the final total was $155.15. It will arrive on the 8th of Jan, shipping FREE. Thanks for the info guys. -Dominic.
