Looking for good sim

Recommendations for a fun, accessible racing sim

Dave So asked for a fun racing game that did not take years to learn. Suggestions included NFS Porsche Unleashed, Viper Racing, Midtown Madness, Mercedes-Benz Truck Racing, Colin McRae Rally 2 and, from several regulars, GPL despite its difficulty. Radical Entertainment's Joe McGinn explained why he thought Midtown Madness 1 was better than its sequel.

Sorry for this post, but I am looking to buy a decent racing or car sim that is FUN and doesn't take 3 years to be able to stay on the track Any ideas ??

NEED FOR SPEED - Porsche Unleashed is your best bet "Dave So" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:uwH26.39570$[email hidden]... > Sorry for this post, but I am looking to buy a decent racing or car simthat > is FUN and doesn't take 3 years to be able to stay on the track > Any ideas ?? > >
Id vote for Viper Racing. its Fun, not to hard and has great online play. It does have GREAT physics too. Better than any NFS game ;) Not to mention its very cheap now... cheap is good...I've heard good things about NFS-P.U. --except it gets old after a bit... GPL...isn't that a bit old ?? How are the graphics ? Don't they all get old after a bit? It's just that some get old quicker than others. "Dave So" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:zjS26.40366$[email hidden]...

get Viper Racing. It is my favorite asphalt racer. Great physics and the best overall "feel". I prefer it to GPL overall. Its main shortcoming is the lack of tracks, once you have conquered the few available.
Dave So wrote... > cheap is good...I've heard good things about NFS-P.U. > --except it gets old after a bit... That pretty good appreciation. The "bit" is dependant on how skillfull you are at the moment. An old hand at sims will blaze through the game in a couple of nights, relative newcomers will have a bigger challenge on their hands. > GPL...isn't that a bit old ?? In computer game terms it's ancient, but that shouldn't stop you from getting it. It's still the best simulation out there, although the learning curve is very steep (but it can be climbed in about six weeks if you devote your life to it, judging from an earlier thread <g>). The developers have patched the game so it runs on modern systems and D3D hardware and it does have the best FF implementation of anything I've tried to date (along with N4, but that figures as it's the same engine), which was also added through a patch. > How are the graphics ? In modern terms and pitted against the likes NFS:PU and SBK2001 one would have to say "adequate", there are several user-made add-ons to spruce things up, however. Graphics is not really the be all and end all in GPL. They're there to show where the edge of the road is. GPL is about the feel of the cars. GPL is about lasting challenge. GPL is about online racing. GPL is life, all the rest is just waiting. ;-) Jan. =---

Some newer titles out.. Insane bit underrated..excellent online game, CMR2,Mercedes Benz truck racing,Midtown Madness2 all good games. there's demos out there for the first 3 games. MM2 is quite enjoyable for the different cities and great for kids. comes down to what style of racing you are after. "Dave So" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:5kb36.43696$[email hidden]...

Mercedes Benz Truck Racing - good physics, nice challenge but fun too. Greatest sim - Grand Prix Legends. It is an effort to learn the tracks and it takes time to get the feel. However, once you start to "get it" it will never let you go. The fact that it is still the most popular sim here after over 2 years speaks for itself. Try it - it`s cheap now and a classic. Back to your question - good fun sims or racers - Viper Racing, SCGT, DTR, Colin Mcrae 1 & 2, Toca 2 & NFS : Porsche Unleashed all have their plus points. Each is a good or great game in its own right. If I had to pick three for you based on your original question it would be :- MBTR NFS : Porsche Unleashed CMR2 BUT I urge you to try GPL.
I've just got hold of NFS Porsche Unleashed (NFS Porsche 2000 here in the UK) and I'm very impressed. Although the physics are not quite up to Viper Racing (but then what other game is?), the graphics are superb (but IMHO the 944 looks a bit "wrong" round the tail-lights!) and at least the NFS game designers are now recognising oversteer...try driving an early 911 to see what I mean! It's certainly held my attention more than my other Christmas present, Colin McRae 2.0. Plus you can get NFS Porsche 2000 for 20 from Electronics Boutique at the moment in a compilation pack with Populous: The Beginning and NBA Live 2000. You can also get a pack with NFS Road Challenge for the same price (with 2 other games), but I don't know if that is similar or not. Doug Hook wrote in message ...

I don't know about your connection-speed, but you could always download a few demo's from a site like the Adreline Vault to try before you buy. That way you can also be pretty sure your system meets the requirements of the game you want to buy... Hey, GPL is out there for only 2 years and 4 months. And you can stay on the track if you drive reeeeally sloooowly, and in that case it is still more fun than to be world champion in the other sims (I have to be honest, I haven't tried all). The real problem here is: one needs wheel and pedals (I have the unexpensive MSPrecision Wheel).

Better optimization (i.e., better city planning to avoid the horrendous frame-rate dropping of MM2). Better races. In MM1 the race points seemed very cleverly placed. In MM I got the impression they were just put in any old place, without an unsderstanding of what makes a great race. Better car progrression. The MM1 cars are all unlocked in MM2, and it takes forever to unlock anything better. Overall it's just a more polished game. My theory: Rockstar Games gave the MM2 sequel job to a bunch of rookies, since it didn't involve hardly any programming; it's mostly just new art. Their a-team was given the job of the REAL Midtown Madness sequel: Midnight Club Street Racig for the Playstation2. And it shows - the game is so much better than MM2 in every way: - city design and layout (especially noticable in London, which is in both games, though New York is very well done too) - race design: the clever and fun races of MM1 are back - gameplay: the characters and driving-in-city system of finding races races, and winning cars from other players. It's a nice evolution from the old-fashioned menu system in MM1 - gameplay again, multiplayer: a cool, fun capture-the-flag game that works well against a buddy or against the computer - Graphics, sense of speed, and frame rate: the game looks better and plays better (no frame rate drops) - Car progression: some of the cars you move up to are totally awesome Joe McGinn _____________________ Radical Entertainment

Ah. I could never get past the stage where you go around the pier in Chicago...(stage 3? 4?)
