Well, I wouldn't have purposely gone Win ME but my PC gave up on me earlier today, and being in the middle of a race series I decided to go out and buy a new one (I have a use for it anyway). Anyway, the new machine is a Packard Bell, Intel 800Mhz machine with an SBLive (WDM) sound card, Nvidia MX graphics card and of course Win ME. First prob was the 128Mb Dimm was duff, so had to replace it with the one from my other machine. Everything in ME worked OK. I added some HDDs with GPL on etc. and had to add a PCI Ethernet Card for my cable modem. Got the cable modem working OK. Got WinVROC working OK and GPL ran from it. I then actually ran GPL, the sound was very distorted, kind of like the static mentioned earlier but you couldn't hear the engine for this other noise. You couldn't really hear this "distortion" at very low revs, but above 1000 and you could (suspect it was always there). I played around with the SB settings, set various things on/off lowered the volume (in win ME and GPL) altered the number of sounds etc. In the end running with 70% volume in Win and about the same in GPL, headphones & no speaker effdcts and no environmental effects. Now it gets strange. I first noticed that when I crashed it reset the sound to perfectly normal. I then noticed that it would actually reset just by me running onto the grass (initiating another sound I think). I had 6 sounds in GPL (although tried 4 and others). BTW, sound played by .wav files, .avi's , .mpegs etc. worked fine. Anyway, it was race time. I jpoined the race from WinVROC expecting the distortion but not present, great I thought. Ran a qual session, no real sound issues or anything untoward. Then the race, did about a lap and blew an engine, reset adn carried on, half a lap later, I heard a windows "tune/sound" and my sound in GPL went off completely. I carried on for a further 4-5 laps with no sound (v. difficult) then the revs died so assumed i'd blown the engine again. tried shift-r, no joy, tried lots of times, no joy no enter/no chat, even Esc didn't work (I could still turn the wheel and get change gear). Eventually GPL kicks me out, adn lo and behold, the sound comes back, and keyboard control. Can anyone shed any light on this? * Anyone succesfully running GPL under WinME with an SBLive? Theres no conflict or probs in Device Manager, and so far WinME, Agent, IE etc. seem to work fine. TIA. Maxx

More INFO. Was typing away and up pops this message, asking me if i want to take a tour of bl**dy WinME!! with the SAME SOUND that cut the sound off in GPL and probably bu**ered everything else up. Anyone know how to disable this. I've let it play through and exited, hopefully it will not come back! Also I've found the SBLive shares an interuot with the USB Host controller, gonna try adn move the card. Still grateful for any help/advice. The problem is its a packard bell. My puter started out as one but soon got changed. The only thing left of the original puter is the hard drive and monitor. We bought the packard 4 years ago. was the worst $3000 we ever spent. The ex employees even have a web page(don't ask me the url, I lost it) telling you how to fix problems with the puters that they weren't allowed to tell you while they were employed.!! I wouldn't have a packard bell now if it was given to me. Customer support sucks. they get your money and then treat you like shit. Our puter had to go back to them to be fixed, and then they lost it!!! good luck steve Maxx <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Brother just had similar problem with intel 700, sblive, nvidia tnt2 pro 32 meg, 128 meg ram. Spent 12 hours trying to get puter going. first the ram was stuffed. got that replaced. then windows wouldn't load because of memory error. when winME started any sound would give "bsod". in other words at start up. puter was taken to parts supplier after 12 hours of buggering around disabling this and that, turning this and that off. Supplier says it was old drivers for sblive causing the problem.(card was bought on 28/12/00) came with 1998 drivers. installed updated drivers and gpl runs 1024x768 back of full grid Kyalami,d3d - 26fps, once off the grid full 36fps. To make a long story short, try different drivers if you haven't already. good luck steve
