"It was Hayes who brought Colin Chapman of Lotus fame and Ford of
Britain's VP of Engineering, Harley Copp, together with the intent of
entering Formula 1 with a 3-liter engine built by Cosworth
Engineering"
Includes a photo of 1967 Lotus and a good article.
Follows closely on the death of another motor-sports great, John Cooper.

Ironically , I was watching an old BBC video a few hours ago , "The Power
and the Glory" in which Walter Hayes featured quite a lot . He was
instrumental in bringing the Cosworth DFV to F1 . Seemed like a true gent .

I worked with his son in advertising in NY for
years. Hayes senior (called "Father" by his son until the latter was deep
into his 40s) not only fathered the Double Four Valve (DFV) for about what
it would cost in mid-60s dollars to develop a new first gear for the Ford
Cortina manual gearbox, he also came out of retirement twice thereafter, the
first time to put Dearborn's p.r. house back in order after the excesses of
Henry Ford II (Deuce--of "never complain, never explain" fame), and again to
set Aston Martin back on its feet after it was gobbled up by FoMoCo. He was
surely the staunchest progenitor of Ford-Europe's fortunes, for which he
deserved--but never got--knighthood. And the best friend of auto racing
that any automaker ever had.
