Did anyone pick up the xmas edition of Autosport? In it, Nigel Roebuch talks
about a 9min movie called "Rendezvous" which he rates highly - it's a film
about a Ferrari being driven at high speeds in the early morning through
Paris. I was wondering if anybody has seen it, and/or knows where to get
hold of it.
Bobby
Just found a Web page that mentions it (film # 39):

But I don't think I'd feel too comfortable giving this site my credit card
info...

Sorry if i'm ruining your viewing pleasure Bruce. Watch it again without
sound and remember that the camera is mounted very low at the front.
(To see the effect of this, watch a GPL hotlap in nose view!)
Now, he isn't going that fast really, is he?
("He" is rumoured to be Jaques Lafitte.)

I recently had my son operate a video camera whilst I did a tour around
Canberra (the tape was for my sister, who live is Queensland) and even
though I never went above 80kph, and was mostly driving at around 60 kph,
when we watched it you would've sworn that we were travelling faster!

You should probably check out the article in the Autosport issue. Nigel
Roebuch is convinced that the whole thing is real. Here's a quote from it:
"In the end, I gave the tape to a pal in the movie business, and he
pronounced it completely genuine. "What you have to study," he said, "is the
speed at which everything else *around* the Ferrari is moving - if it's too
fast, then you know that the whole thing is speeded up. But everything is
normal speed - the pedestrians, the pidgeons, the flashing lights, the other
traffic..."
Just struck jackpot, by the way:

Steaming video, or buy it through Amazon (though my finances won't quite
stretch that far for a 9min video). Just d/l'ing the stream right now - will
post back when I've seen it.

Downloaded it. Quality is poor - it's a 6meg file for a 9min video, and it
looks as though half the frames have been dropped because it feels very
slow. But the engine sounds amazing. :-)

>When I first saw this film I thought it was amazing! Here's this guy
screaming
through redlights at what seems like a 100 mph. This impressions lasted
until the same question came up on another NG, where somebody pointed
out that maybe something is wrong in the state of Denmark. I taped it when
it
was showed on Swedish satellite show "Motorjournalen" (no need to
translate that title!) about a year ago, and have looked at it in "critical
mode"
lately. The video seems real enough, no speeding up or something like that.
I'm not so convinced about the sound. There's loud tire squeal at corners
taken at very moderate speeds, at one point he passes a light after three
upshifts and at fairly high revs, which in a Ferrari (sounds like one) in at
least
fourth gear must mean a very high speed, and then you look at the same clip
w-o sound and he isn't going much faster than I would!
I wouldn't stick my head so far out as pronouncing it a fake, but I do smell
a
rat here. And then you think about it. Nine minutes, no cuts, all in one
take,
how could they possibly have edited something like that some 25 years ago?
Shoot the video first and then try to create the sound to sync? Or worse,
record the sound and then have somebody drive to match?!?

After a look at this video, I'm not impressed with it.
The driving is at illegal speeds, but nowhere near racing speeds, as
the sound suggests.
For example, the guy is driving along the straight Champs Elyses,
passing the Arc de Triomphe at 01:33 min, and the Oblisque on the
Place de la Concorde at 02:48, so he spend about 75 seconds for a
distance of approx. 2150m according to my map of Paris.
That's an average of 103km/h or 64 mph.
Anyone with more knowledge of Paris, or at least a map of it, might
compare the whole route to the Rendezvous.
At around 05:40, he is forced to pass a parked truck slowly.
As the sound tells us, he then accelerates and upshifts 4 times.
That would be in 5th gear, well over 200km/h in a Ferrari.
But the video looks like he's just cruising at 60 km/h.
Reckless driving? Probably yes.
But a legendary record of "road racing"? Not at all.
Somewhere, there must be a video of a motorbiker speeding around the
"Pripherique" in Paris, at 200km/h through heavy traffic, trying to
set a new "lap record".
I haven't seen it, but it was shown on German TV and heavily discussed
in motorbike newsgroups.

I saw this tape about 8-9 years ago on Canadian TV, the guy was
a nut! I think he called himself "l'Ange Noir" (black angel) or
something like that.
I heard that he died a few years later trying to better his record.
His first name was Pascal, and the movie is to be found on the net, search
for 'Pascal rides la Periferique'.
It was posted here about 7-8 months ago, maybe do a deja search.
