I posted a similar question early and would like to thank everybody for
responding. But some of the suggestions that people made,I've tried. I'm
going to try to be clearer with what I have and have done. I'm being a pain
in the ass about this because this is my father's Florida computer and I
need to get the game working before I leave on the 2nd of January.
system:
PIII 866
NVIDIA Riva TNT 2 Model 64 (TNT 2 is not a typo)
128 ram
SBLive Sound Card
Windows ME
GPL with 1.2 and 3d patch
Run the game at 800 X 600
Latest NVIDIA drivers
SBLive Drivers that came with system (system was new Dec. this year)
My main problem is frame rate. When I use Nigel's sound patch the frame rate
is worse. It takes hits down to the single digits. When I take it out it is
better but still not great (15fps-20fps). It's fine when I'm alone on the
track. Ok so don't use the sound patch.
My dad has another system (up north) that is exactly the same but a PIII
600. I use the open GL patch and the game runs very good. I tried the open
GL patch on the 866 system and when I go to the track the image does not
fill the monitor frame. It only is a partial frame. What's up with that?
My questions are. Should I be able to get 36fps all the time with the Riva
TNT 2 card? I would be willing to buy a voodoo 3 3000 for 100 bucks. But
what concerns me is why I lose frame rate with Nigel's sound patch? Also why
can't I get the open GL patch to work? I followed all the "read me" and did
what they said. Should I update the sound card drivers?
Hopefully I'm making sense.
.
Thanks to everybody for helping.

You should be constant 36fps with that system in honesty.
I have a PII 350, 16mb Gfx, 64MB RAM and only fall short of 36fps at race
starts.
How is the game without any addon's, just the basic package from the CD?
A lot of sounds and graphics (especially 3d wheels) take up FPS since the
system needs to take more energy in using these than the default ones.
Other than that use alt-ctrl-del to wipe out everything running in the
background.
Other than that I'd guess that your GFX card doesn't look kindly on GPL,
I've heard of some cards running poorly on some games if they're not
compatible.

dunno if it will work, but it sure helped my Geforce to run alot faster.

I'd start with a base of no add on grapics or sounds, then:
The mirrors are a fps hog. Set the *Mirror Detail Level* to cars only.
Also under QUALITY turn off both lighting effects. Under EFFECTS I have
everything OFF except skidmarks. All my other details are on. Using a
P3 550/TNT2 I run at 1024/768 with excellent fps, except at starts with
large fields, at all original tracks. Some add on tracks tend to run a
bit slower in spots.

First....make sure you have updated your SOUNDCARD drivers.
2nd. ditto for the video.
3rd. GPL is presented in a 'Letterbox' format. You are SUPPOSED to see
black bars above and below the cockpit....
4th. The Opengl patch was a stop gap effort and never officially finished
or supported.
5th. The d3d patch also was not supported, but was coded by a Papyrus
employee on his own time.
6th. The D3d patch normally produces MUCH better framerate results. and
improved graphic quality and HUGELY improved mirror images.
7th. It almost sounds like you are running in software mode. Make sure you
READ the D3D instructions included in the readme file. You will probably
have to make a few changes to a file called: core.ini The readme file
contains the details.
8th Once you have properly installed the d3d patch(you must use the method
detailed in the readme file) go to the options page of gpl and select the
d3d rasterizer. Then exit gpl and restart. You should see a big
improvement.
9th Sorry this should have been first. DELETE your install of gpl and start
over. No fancy wheels, sounds, etc. Get the sim running properly, then you
can experiement with add-ons.
10th GPL is more dependant upon the cpu speed than many other games. A
good vid card can help but the cpu is the main factor in deciding
performance.
Your PIII 866 should deliver very good frame rates, you may have to adjust
the graphic detail slider and possibly turn off some effects, but you appear
to have a stout enough system to run GPL properly.
good luck

Chris,
my frames rates always improve dramatically (from ~25 to ~35) when in the
file app.ini I set
[ Communications ]
disableDirectConnect = 1
Hope it works for you too,
Richard
