Geez, I missed my OWN race... :(
My computer decided to act bitchy. Grrr...
I was late setting up the race. My racing DUN didn't want to connect, for
various reasons. Number busy, the computer has refused your connection, the
computer has dropped your connection, etc. I was going to use my AOL account
just so I could setup the race for all the people who must be waiting - that
didn't work either. Ok, may as well try the racing DUN. After SEVERAL
attempts(more than 20), it connected.
Great - connected to my remote GPL server, setup the race, everyone starts
jumping in. 23 laps?!? WTF? I loan my servers to 4 or 5 leagues, one of them
must have changed the .ini file.
Ok, kicked everyone out, shutdown the server, connected through FTP, d/l'd the
.ini files, corrected the number of laps, uploaded to the server. Setup the
race again.
I connected, number of laps is right - whew! Uh oh - no mouse. Oh, come
ON...!
Ok, bail out, then jump back in. At least I have a cursor now...(scared to
touch the mouse until I get to the track screen). Track screen - it still
works. Hmm, why didn't it work 2 minutes ago? Ah well, no matter, all is well
now...
I go to the track. For some reason, both the sound and control input were
'notchy'. I tried to drive, but it was a lost cause.
Ok, maybe I need to reboot. Logoff, exit, reboot - no good.
Well, I had the Ringtrainer program change the start line. I haven't run an
online Ring race since then, maybe that's the problem? Try another track - no
good. All the AI cars are Coopers?!?
Hmm...I loaded that 'markenpokal' util - maybe that's the problem. Uninstall -
no good. Try another reboot - no good.
Oh yeah, I had to re-load my SBLive for emulation mode to run an ICR2 offline
league race. Uninstalled both creative labs programs - no good. Try another
reboot - no good.
Oh yeah - I changed some settings to try to get Death Track Racing(Rollcage2)
to work, as suggested by their tech support. Changed the acceleration for both
playback and recording devices back to full, reboot. Well, at least the sound
is ok, but now it's shifted to lo-res graphics - 12fps. Check the graphics
settings - GPL wasn't set for the 3DFX - WTF? Ok, reset it. Oh, I have to
restart the game? Ok, restart - still no good. Argh!
Oh yeah - I think I also changed the graphics acceleration under Win98 to
troubleshoot Rollcage. Went to the performance options - acceleration was
off<sigh>. Ok, change it back to full, reboot. Ok cool, it works!
It's about 1:45... Based on the delays in starting the race, I just *might*
have enough time to catch it, and start from the back.
Remember that <expletive> DUN connection? Grrr....
It took about *30* attempts this time. Ok, I'm connected. Waiting for the
race list...<taps foot> There it is!
Server E. Pickett, Race - Nurburgring, Status.....*in transition*.... What the
hell, I'll try to connect anyway...no good - too late.
...I wonder how the race went...<sobs...>
I try to take one problem at a time, but recently, several have attacked me at
once. I won't go into more detail about the problems running that offline ICR2
race, or of trying to get GP3 and Rollcage2 to run(neither works yet), or of
the panic I'm in over the Bull Run 2K at the US Pits...or even the squirrels
that are fighting in my attic... :(
No, I may as well go shovel all this <expletive> snow that's falling...

You were missed..... but we could't hold of the start any longer as the
crowds were getting restless.
I can only speak for myself, and I had a great race.. until my damned wheel
quit on me in midflight. Chrashed out of what later turned out to be the
lead. Still it was the longest i have ever driven at the Ring, and it was a
great feel to know that I was fu**ed if I even brushed a barrier
slightly.... sort of makes you focus a bit more.
The few people I encountered on my way through the german woods were quite
polite, and waited until i gave them room, before attemting any passing....
nice to race people with a bit of patience.
Looking very much forward to your next session.
By the way... Jan won it, Topi came second and I believe I actually managed
third (everybody else fell off ;) although the scoreboard sadly says
otherwise. I hit a massive warp, my screen froze for 10-12 seconds and
suddenly I found myself unharmed at the side of the road. That lap didn't
register at the server for some reason ;)

Damn, you certainly had bad luck. You could have interrupted the
practice until everything was under control. It would have been nice to
have you there as well.
As for the winner, Jan Verschueren got the 1st place after everyone else
had disconnected or crashed by lap 9; big congratulations to Jan! I've
put the complete report from GPL Replay Analyzer to
<http://aton.co.jyu.fi/~tjp/ring.txt>.
I had been training Mosport with Honda (gotta drive it in our league)
for the whole day and wasn't sure whether to participate at all. Then I
got the old trusty Ferrari, jumped to the server and tried a couple of
practice laps, which went quite nicely and I decided to take the plunge.
Unsurprisingly, there was a pile-up at T1 and I guess a couple of guys
dropped right there. Someone spun in front of me and I hit him in the
side, but fortunately I had time to brake so there wasn't any damage. I
let some clearly faster drivers by during the first lap and started the
long, long, LONG ordeal...
After 7 laps, I and Jan were the only ones left and I was practically
staring at the monitor and drooling, thankful for the long straights
where I could flex my arms and legs. I couldn't concentrate at all and
was scraping the walls every so often. Then during lap 9 at Wehrseifen I
forgot to brake for the bridge and hit it hard, losing my rear wheel.
Jan drove cleanly and went through the finish line.
It would have been nice to break my PB (8:32), but my times were 10-30
seconds slower even though I thought I was doing pretty nicely.
Definitely the longest and hardest practice session ever. :)

For me the race went really bad..
First I did a warmup lap, and when I crossed the s/f line and went for
my first qualifying lap, someone left the pitch and rammed me. It was
too stupid for words, the guy just didn't look in the mirrors and just
threw his car in front of mine. Turned out it was a 'newbie' and after
he took out someone else he luckily left the race.
So I had to do another warmup lap, and there was time left for 1
qualifying lap. I got the third position, 8:22 lap I believe.
Ok, race starts. I realize that I forgot to select my race setup!
I went to the setup menu, chose the race setup, went back to the
racing screen and.. the race allready started :(
So I could only join the race from the pits while the rest allready
was gone. On the first lap I overtook a couple of cars, and I drove
really easy, I didn't want to blow up my engine again.
At the end of the lap, at the long straight, I didn;t give full
throttle to spare the engine. In my mirrors I saw a Ferrari in the
distance behind me. He was giving full throttle, I saw that he gained
on me. After the straight I took the lefthander, I watched in my
mirros to see where the Ferrari was, and.. I noticed too late that I
should have braked. With 60mph I hit the railing, and my wheel broke
off.
End of the race for me. Didn't even finish one lap.
One of my worst races ever :(
Andre
Going in, as at Zand I felt I had a better than even chance of finishing on
the podium if I could just stay in the race, qualifying with full fuel
purposely to avoid the hotlappers in front. But even approaching T1 close
to last I caught the tailend of the pileup, as boneheads still went in two
wide or too fast, even though they knew full well position meant about
nothing in a 2hour race. Anyway.
By the start of L6 I was in 3rd (not sure where Mikkel was) and looking at
the laptimes afterwards had done two 8:32s in a row. That was just too fast
for me, especially with 10laps of fuel on board. I should have been slowing
down instead of speeding up and waiting a couple more laps to see if Paavola
was gaining ground. Without enough experience though, brainfade set in,
caught some grass, & etc. As at Zand the turtles beat all the hares :)

Sorry to hear of your woes Eldred.
My race was pretty uneventful after the start.
Started from near the back of the field after foregoing qualifying. Decided
to take it easy for a lap or two before picking up the pace on lighter fuel
and hot tyres. Plans were scuppered when a Ferrari hit me from behind in the
braking zone to turn 1. Four wheels still on my wagon but with handling now
suspect, I was very circumspect for the first 1/2 lap before learning the
new handling traits of my mount. Managed to Keep it up for 5 laps, even
picking off a car or two. The car was a pig to drive and I made a few minor
excursions managing to keep the car from hitting anything.
By lap 6, I was comfortably running in 6th place and was was actually
enjoying the ride, albeit a lonely one, when suddenly in red type.

Bad luck Eldred...
Maybe you could benifit from the format c: type of solution to your
problems. Installing everything fresh with latest software/drivers cures
most ails and ultimately it's quicker than sorting out an ongoing mess.
I appreciate you hosting these events and would like to see you do well in
them. So, as far as I'm concerned you can delay an event because of
technical reasons. Before I agree to do a race I must be sure for myself I
have time to run it, so I'm never in a great hurry when racing online. Or
maybe you can just boost practise a little on the next one, buy yourself
some time in case you get unstuck.

Agree, that was pretty silly... I wasn't going as fast as usual, braked
early and still had to take to the grass to avoid an accident. Then again,
it's a casual, open race, so you can expect as much. Too bad some people
don't seem to realise they really shouldn't join GP lenght races. Both the
skill <cough> and the mindset are basic requirements. Maybe we ought to
organise future efforts a little more and limit access. I thought I saw some
"names" (pretty heavy hitters in simracing) lurking with intent in chat
which didn't show in the race. Guess they couldn't get in?

That is hard, isn't it? -Not allowing yourself to get ahead of yourself and
the car. Especially at the Ring, because the weight comes off in relatively
big chuncks. Each time you drive a certain section the car is significantly
lighter. I noticed in earlier offline and online races I really had to pace
myself to go slower than I can usually safely do just to prevent any
overenthousiasm.
> As at Zand the turtles beat all the hares :)
"sustainable pace" is the magic word. ;-)

You joked about me riding shotgun for you earlier. Which was exactly what I
did for a while before your disco. To me, of course, I was just "tagging
along behind Mark until the time came to do something about those 48
seconds". ;-)
