I'm looking to get rid of my 21inch CRT for a larger gaming screen; 30
inch CRT would be awesome but manufacture idiots don't make such a
thing. I'm pretty clueless on pluses and minuses of the various formats
- projection, LCD or plasma.
My main purpose is for high end gaming with high resolution (I always
have a badass vid card btw). I could care less about movies or TV.
I don't see LCD for PC larger than 24inch, and thats not enough of an
increase over my 21 inch CRT. Do I have to go to a LCD TV? Don't LCD TVs
suck for gaming cause of limited resolutions and such?
Can some of you knowledgeable folk suggest some thing for larger than 21
inch screen gaming? thanks
Choosing a larger display for PC gaming
A user wanted to replace a 21-inch CRT with a bigger gaming screen. Advice favoured projectors, particularly DLP, over large LCDs because of response times and resolution limits. Others debated TV-out resolutions and 720p versus 1080i, and some said a 21-inch CRT was still best.

It would be 480i at best via svideo. Even with component out it is not
going to be super high resolution like on a PC monitor.
1080i = 1920x1080
720p = 1280x720
Wide-screen 480p (DVD, EDTV) = 852x480
Regular TV Up to 480 lines

Well you can check out the above - whether it would have acceptable
performance for YOUR gaming is something that only you could answer.
Since LCDs came out there's always someone who has no issues with aa
slower LCD while others are screaming about ghosting - rather like the
fps screaming between those that just need 25-30, and those that swear
they can see the difference between 120 fps and 125 fps.

Here's the biggest on Sharp's UK site:
http://www.sharp.co.uk/products/product.asp?id=928
1920x1080 resolution with DVI input.
They released details of a 65" one, but I don't think that is on sale in UK
yet (or even Japan??)

FWIW I think you're better off getting a projector (for value for money)...

I'd second the projector suggestion. I have a 21" Dell CRT, a 17" LCD and a
projector. The 21" is great for games but playing HL2, Riddick, Far Cry or
D3 on a 5' screen cannot be beaten.
When looking for one, DLP, lumens (high), contrast ratio (high)and noise
levels (low) are the things to look at. The Raven for the x-box is the sort
of thing to look at as an example:

there isn't much better than a 21" CRT right now, especially if you're after
high resolution, high quality gaming. For the high end user, there was an
IBM CRT monitor that I saw at PC Expo a couple years back that was something
like 25" with 4000+ x 4000+ resolution, but I was looking for it recently
and couldn't find it any longer. Projections, LCDs and plasmas aren't ready
for prime-time high end gaming, IMO, so just enjoy what you have. My pick
for best monitor right now (even though it's a few years old) is the Sony
F520.

The trouble with larger screens is that the response time generally sucks.
However, it is worth pointing out that when you buy an LCD, you really are
getting the measurement that it says - a 24" is a 24" for example. I
wouldn't be surprised if the actual viewable area of your 21" CRT is
actually 19.8" or something similar.

This reopens the great Vsync on/off debate. Although 1080i *LOOKS* on paper
to be a higher spec 720p due to it being non-interlaced (physically
refreshes every line every scan) is actually better. Just as Vsync off will
never give you 150fps if your monitor can only output a 60hz refresh rate
(no matter what fraps tells you).
You didnt mention what video card you run just that it badass ;) Does it do
HD and what connections does it have DVI?
If you insist on size over quality Id be looking for a 1080p DLP of a size
that meets your needs and budget. The reality is even this isnt going to
look very good compared to a Monitor though.
Have you looked at that Dell 24" widescreen for the $700 range? It wont be
much taller but it will be wider than your 21". Thats what Id do and wait
another couple years for the TV standards to catch up.

Actually the ATI Radeons do 720p and 1080i via their TV outs (Component)
but the drivers are very buggy to say the least (especially for PAL
users) The best bet if your display doesn't have VGA inputs is to use a a
VGA->Component adapter and setup the correct resolutions with Powerstrip.
I just went from a 22" CRT to a 19" LCD (Hyundai L90D+). The conversion
cost me $359 and I'll never look back.

I have a 50" DLP, the Samsung "Star Trek" (most DLP's are fixed 720p aka
1280X720) and I have ZERO issues with quality when using my home-built HTPC.
I don't believe a 1080i DLP exists. TI is working on the 1080p chipset
though. Might be out by now and I bet it's expensive.

85". If you vid card is stout, you can turn on some AA and smooth out
the jaggies pretty nice on most stuff. You can find these and others
of the same generation of projectors (ca 2002) for less than an grand.
You can find newer low-end models for around $1500. The size
definitely rocks.
The problem with projectors is the layout. You've got to have the
space behind you. You have to have a nice flat white surface to
project it on. You have to mount the thing securely, but in a manner
that accomodates adjusting the location of the projected image. And
then you've got to concern yourself with getting the signal from your
vid card to the proj without having cabling running somewhere where you
can trip over it. And unless your projector is very bright (and I
would say, even if it is), you will want some kind of light control in
the room or the image will look way washed out, especially compared to
the CRT you have now. Dont forget to budget for replacement bulbs,
which are not exactly cheap.
If you can solve all these problems, I think a projector is the way to
go.
Good luck,
Gerald
