First rFactor formula car video divides opinion
David G Fisher linked a video of open-wheel cars in rFactor. Some criticised the cockpit jiggle, tail slides and cartoonish graphics, comparing it to older arcade titles. Others noted that the vibration was user-adjustable and the physics promising, and said the rFactor demo proved the engine's quality. The video was compared unfavourably with SimBin's GT Legends trailers.

Not sure. What's with the cockpit jiggling about like that? Also,
going onto the grass didn't seem to make much difference. Plus there
was some tail sliding through the corners which seems a bit out of place
for those type of cars.

My thoughts exactly. An F1 car drifting looks very arcadey and silly.
This appears to be a wmv file, yet my Windows Media Player can't play
it. Also, the way the link is set up I can't save the file.
Suggestions? Is there another location that I can get it from?
Thanks,
Russell

They also have traction control; if TC is off, 1000bhp=serious drifting!
> f1 cars do drift - watch em live. They drift a LOT.
Have to disagree I'm afraid. Drifting an F1 car around like in that video
would destroy the tyres in about 3-4 laps. Drifting is not the fastest
possible way around a corner. Unfortunately they didn't realise that back
in the era GPL simulates...(or at least they couldn't do much about it)
In article <[email hidden]>, [email hidden]

I'd imagine the optimum slip angle of a 1967 vs a 2005 Formula (or other
high downforce modern racecars) tire are many degrees apart, allowing
the 1967 cars much more leeway in how far they can get sideways before
it becomes a disadvantage in cornering speed.

Oh I don't think it's the fatest way for sure - but they do drift. And
judging by the smashfest in the vid, I doubt these guys were too interested
in being fast, nor completing more than a few laps! ;-)

When I read your post I was worried. When I saw the movie I wasn't. The
strange jiggling could easily be a poorly optimised vibration effect (it's
still in development after all), so the jury's out on that one. But the
brief tail slides (a more serious issue in sim terms) looked very similar
to the slides I've seen in real F1/F3000 races.... quick loss or rear grip
on hot tyres, ease off, snaps back. You don't see a lot of them in real
life because the drivers are supposed to know what they're doing. Someone
inexperience with the real life cars or rFactor's simulation is going to
have a lot less control. And judging by the video, the guy wasn't being
particularly careful with his tyres.
Anyway, I saw nothing there that scared me. The only ISI game I've bought
before was so I could take a look at the GTR mod (or whichever one it was,
I forget now). But rFactor really does look and feel (from the demo) like
they've crossed a simulation threshold. I've been wrong before, but
I'm very hopeful.

Still a bit worried about the overtaking by going onto the grass on the

What happens when cars leave the tarmac has always been a bit iffy in
sims. It may be one of those areas where total realism might be a bit too
much to handle... or to justify modelling in detail, especially when we're
asking for ever-higher fidelity in the actual tarmac... bumps, roughness,
marbles. Modelling a car width or so either side of the track in detail as
well would add considerably to the workload, so shortcuts are inevitable
Of course it's also another area where I imagine beta testing has a large
part to play, tweaking the balance between realism and gameplay.

.wmv format is usually pretty "foolproof", with codecs getting downloaded
automatically. It's more likely to be a corrupt download IME.

Yes. However, when you're in the car you also feel the motion, so
your brain can correct the information it gets from the eyes. You
can't do this when driving a sim, so you might suffer
motionsickness...

The cockpit vibration effect is already tunable to user preference in the
PLR file. Frequency and multiplier are adjustable, both for primary and
secondary effects. This is the norm for current ISI offerings. Similar
settings exist in NSR as well; you can even choose whether to have the
rearview mirror vibrate or not, and what percentage of your vibration is
tied to engine revs vs. road speed.
Can't really say much about the Formula car behavior from the video, though
I agree they look a bit slidey. Main thing I noticed is the car and cockpit
graphics look a little cartoonish, similar to the current ones in the
rFactor demo. I think that's an aesthetic choice, as the engine can
certainly deliver better. The scenery looks much more realistic, which
makes for an odd combination. Sort of like animated characters in an
otherwise live-action movie. Rebecca Rabbit comes to mind, proving
animation's not such a bad thing... ;-)
Slow-mo'ing through the crash scenes, it looks like they've improved that
area a lot over the F1C-generation engine. Hope the replay capability is
improved to match!

Did I see a bug get splattered on the camera lense? Any sim that models
bug splatters can't be all bad. I noticed the cars behaved when rolling.
Too often, that condition creates unrealistic launches towards the
stratosphere and/or a dozen too many rolls. They seem to have tamed the
car flipping.(remember when we begged for a car that could go verticle?)
I will agree, the sliding seems a tad overdone for Formula 1, but are
those F1 or F3? (grooved tires...'should' be F1)

Yeah, noticed that. I wonder (and it would not surprise me in the

It's not a Papy project you know! :) I suppose someone other than Papy

I'd be happy with 2 out of 3 of those. The graphics, as Steve B said,
didn't quite look realistic to me either, but wasn't as bothered about
the look as the physics side of things so didn't comment first time

Based on the video, it looks like the wings in ISI's engine still
generate downforce when the car is sideways (a'la F1C/F1-2002/etc).

When I looked at the .hdv files for F1c, it appeared they had a formula
for computing yaw and slip reduction in downforce. So I would guess then,
that it is merely a matter of finding a more accepatble value to input into
those formulae...

Definitely. I always set those to 1.0 for racing the AI, I just wish
they'd set it better by default.

When the full version is out and if it is decent and leagues are using it
then I'll consider it. I have past the days of jumping on every new demo
and wasting time with them until they are known to be keepers.

Couldn't resist revisting this in light of the GTL presentation videos that
popped up on BHMS today. Assuming SimBin are using gMotor2 as well, there
couldn't be a better example of two totally different aesthetic approaches.
Load them up side by side and that rFactor formula car video looks like an
old Ubisoft game next to GTL.
The former looks like a brightly-colored, oversaturated computer game, while
GTL, at least from the incar view, is getting closer to photorealism.
They're blurry, cruddy MOV's, but the textures and lighting look great.
In article <[email hidden]>,
[email hidden] says...
Just took a look at those GTL Quicktime Movies 'to compare' and that
game sure looks interesting, regardless of the graphic qualities. :)

I assume as a demo it is limited in some fashion or is it the complete full

It is a mulitplayer test demo. They have crippled a good portion of the
graphics and the physics. Still, when you compare it to a Touring Car mod
from F1c, you'll be pleased. I think ETCC by the RSR mod group was/is
spectacular in representing Touring Cars. The car of choice in the demo
ranges from a near street car to a full blown TC. THink a Honda Civic
morphing into a Real Time Acura Speed World Challenge Touring Car.
There is only one fictional track and only the three levels of the same
type of car, but here is where you need to pay attention.
ISI stuff works differently than Papyrus. I'm not saying better and I'm
certainly not saying worse...but different. You can be using this time to
familiarize yourself with the ISI methodology and controller setups. If
you use 100 linearty for your wheel axis in Papyrus sims, then think 50%
for ISI. If you try and use Papy numbers with rFactor, then you will have
a plowing boat of a car.
So don't worry about 'beta testing' for some company, they have already
done most of the r&D on the multiplayer aspects. What is out there now is
mainly a free classroom. It is a chance for you to get at least familiar
with how this line of sims works.
I loved the demo when it first came out...but I have rarely driven it
since, mainly because I have a league that I don't practice enough for
already, and I'm helping finish some F1c mod stuff so SSM can move on to
fFactor once it finally is released.

Thanks Dave, that helps. As I said I don't have much time either so I'll
pass until a full version is out. Sounds interesting though but I may be
sticking with Papy for sometime since I typically just run NASCAR ovals and
roadies as is in our league and this may not replace that unless there is a
stock car mod for it planned.

Hehe... Actually, I was thinking back further than MGPRS2, but couldn't
remember what they called that POS. ;-) I agree the graphics in that
formula car vid are kind of cartoonish, but since I have the rFactor demo I
know the scenery generally looks good. The banners and buildings do have a
bit of that same look, but It's primarily the cars that look "gamey" in
rFactor. I think they're going for a "look" that appeals to gamers as well
as sim-heads, while the folks at SimBin have a much more focused target
market in mind. I still like rFactor, mind you - just muchly prefer the
realistic direction SimBin are going graphically.

rfactor seemed to have got rid of that washed out look of the previous
engines. The cartoony cars don't bother me as I am sure some real life skins
will shortly be available after release.
I just focused on single seaters with some pretty wayward rear ends like you
would see in the lower formulas like Formula Renault etc (or even a Minardi
on the ragged edge!) and it looked great to me. Depends what you want. I'd
rather be fighting the car with some turn in oversteer whilst pulling off an
overtaking manouvre than putting in the perfect F1 lap whilst the opponent
pits.

You mean the second incarnation of RS? I think it wasn't all bad, for
its day and age of course.
