Rally spectators standing dangerously close to the stages

EldredP was astonished by rally fans lining the roads on a Speedvision recap. Others shared stories of spectators being hit, cancelled stages, and Colin McRae striking a fan in New Zealand, and noted that US rallies keep spectators back because of liability concerns.

I'm watching the rally 'recap' on Speedvision. I can't *believe* the spectators line up right NEXT to the road. I even saw people sitting ON the outside guardrail on several turns... WTF? Stupid... I've heard of people reaching out and touching the cars as they go by. (I imagine it's very annoying for the crew to have to remove body parts from the car after that kind of event...) EldredP wrote:

No kidding ;)
I personally liked the fans who were in the road as the cars came to them, got out of the way, and then ran after them when they passed. Truly crazy people. -Pav On 1 Jan 2001, EldredP wrote:

I wish Speedvison would run " Attack of the Killer B's ". Great Rally documentary about the old Audi team. The Speedvison Rally show today was great. I always wanted to know what a 500k Subaru WRC looked like in piece's! ************************************ Dave Pawlikowski [email hidden] www.cushdrive.com www.luftwaffe-experten.com ICQ - 103134094 ************************************ "

I was thinking the same thing while watching today. That's why it isn't too uncommon for rally spectators to be inured or killed. I'm pretty sure that in the history of rally racing, more spectators have been killed than drivers. Did you notice that some of the legs had to be canceled because of the spectators? The total number of killed is probably not up to one particular circuit racing event's('56 Le Mans). >I'm pretty sure that >in the history of rally racing, more spectators have been killed than >drivers. Nope. Here in Sweden, we had our first spectator fatality ever past fall. It was truly a freak accident though, as the spectators stood in a safe area behind two trees. But the car got airborn in an "unusual" fashion and got between the two trees sideways reaching the two onlookers. Something similar happened in GB a year or two ago. In northern Europe this isn't a big problem. *However*, in the mediterranean countries this is a HUGE problem though, most notably in portugal. I don't know what the problem is, but maybe it brings out the matador in every portoguese? :-) Btw, this was a huge problem on the Targa Florio as well. Must be a cultural thing or something. Rally drivers are not lunatics either, and it has happened more than once that they have refused to start on crowded stages. >Did you notice that some of the legs had to be canceled because of >the spectators? Anyways, as it pertains to Portugal, one very odd side note is that Portugal has one of the highest traffic fatality rates on Earth. Perhaps their suicidal driving technique gets ported over into their enthusiasm of the sport. :) - Alan

I went to one of the stages whilst I was on holiday once, have to admit I left early because I was totally convinced one of the Portuguese supporters was going to be run over in front of me. totally insane Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/
Just remember Frank.. thats probably why Rally isn't as popular in the States. Lawyers and Insurance! The sanctioning bodies could never allow it. The first time one of the moron spectactor got a pebble in the eye... he would be filing a $250,000,000 lawsuit. <sarcasm>Oh no, no, it's ok, they are professional Rally and are so brilliant, that they can win rallies by staying out of the spectators way! </sarcasm> <sarcasm>Oh, it the Rally driver hit the fan, it must have been the drivers fault</sarcasm> The drivers are great to be able to deal with it and for there to be so few accidents when it is so easy to wipe out 20 people at 1 corner. Some fans are crazy though, stupid too... EldredP <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > I'm watching the rally 'recap' on Speedvision. A Rally round p of the WRC season was on Eurosport a few days ago. While watching a lot of the time on a lot of rallies, spectators were filling the track, ducking out of the way as the car comes and then quickly fill the track again, madness!
Fans in southern Europe (Portuguese, Italians and Greeks) are without doubt the craziest , standing in the middle of the road just after a jump for example. Mind you , Fangio used to hate the Mille Miglia for the same reason so it's not limited to rallying alone . Moss said he used to play with the steering wheel to make the fans think he'd lost control . Didn't do him any harm when he won it in '55 Andrew DeadAndRestless <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

A valid excuse, since in the '98 New Zealand rally he mowed down an idiot spectator who thought he could get a good picture from the apex of a corner that McRae was cut by a huge amount. The spectator got himself a broken leg, damn lucky not to get any worse!

Buy the 98 review, all of a sudden McRae comes around a corner and you see a guy do a big flip and a piece of McRae's car falls off. He clipped the guys right leg and he flipped SO FAST. Thanks, Alex Andre Warringa <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I've been watching rallying since I was born since my dad is from Kenya, so it almost doesn't seem crazy anymore, and I'm American! Anyways, if you go to any rallies here in the US, the spectators stand in safe spots (not in run-off areas) and few feet from the road because of sue happy people here. Anyways, there's nothing more thrilling than a rally car sliding past your toes at 100mph! I stood next to the fence at an Indy car race...the power of those cars flying by was unbelievable. Can't imagine standing next to the cars at a rally, must be one helluva rush.
