Apologies if this is a FAQ...
Every now and then the wheel (on the "car") snaps to one side then
recenters. Occasionally, this will throw me out of control. It happened
once as I landed after the Flugplaz (nasty accident).
I'd assumed it was my inexpensive wheel or SBLive! gameport. However, today
I bought a USB LWFF and the same thing happens except now it's really
pissing me off because the LWFF jumps when it happens. It's a brand new
wheel so it's not likely to be dirty pots.
I see on the GPL eGroup that this is common but I couldn't find a good
solution. Is there a fix/solution for this.
Thanks,
Dale.

It sounds to me like you have the steering torque setting in the
core.ini set too low. Either of these things can cause "spikes" in
the force feedback, which makes the wheel suddenly jerk when it
shouldn't. Having said that, your example of it happening as you
landed at Flugplatz isn't a good one because I would expect the
wheel to jerk a bit on landing anyway. But then again, GPLs
physics and FF interact in a way that can sometimes throw up
these spikes, in the same way that a large accident in an online
race can cause GPLs physics engine to "freak out"! I use quite
subtle force feedback settings and still get the odd "spike", but
my LWFF has never jumped when it happens, the wheel just
lurches a bit which is why I think you have too much force.
For what it's worth (Different PCs and driver configs seem to give
different results), my LWFF settings are as follows:
Iin Wingman Profiler Device/game controllers/properties/settings:
Overall 75% Spring 100% Damping 20%
In specific game settings 120% force (this is where I fine tune)
In core.ini and Winroc
damping 3.5 latency 0.035 force 210
All the best,

I was getting it with my old non-force feedback wheel too.

I wasn't too clear there. The wheel actually moved severely while I was in
the air. When I landed the wheels weren't straightened yet sending me off
into the fencing. That said, it seems to happen under almost any driving
condition.
Now this is where it gets worrying... I just fired up F1 2000 and it's
happening there but only when I go fast. If I cruise around the track in
low revs the wheel (on the screen) is fine but as soon as I get the RPMs up
high it'll jump.
This is weird because it happened in GPL with an Interact V3 wheel/SB Live!
gameport and a LWFF/USB. What is happening? These are very quick full-lock
(then back) snaps.
Thanks. I've been looking for some LWFF settings to try.

I had this with a ActLabs RSForce wheel - developed over the first few
weeks .... after email to ActLab support who (to my surprise) gave me
permission to take the cover off and see what I could find (I'd assumed
that this would come under the catergory of "behaviour likely to void
your warrenty") I tracked it down to a a dry solder joint on one of the
pot connections.
However, as you say this happened on 2 wheels it perhaps not likely to
be the same mecahnical failure on both.

If it's not bad pots, it could be a problem with polling of the wheel.
In your Game Controller applet, there should be a setting Poll with
Interrupts Enabled. Uncheck this and see if it helps.

It could be possible you are experiencing tire damage. Sometimes, I know
MANY folks here will find this hard to believe, I have smacked a wall
rather forcefully. At first blush the car seems fine but as I motor away
the car will get very squirrely and the wheel will jerk occaisionally. If I
retire at that point, the reason will usually be 'puncture' or something
similar. Just a possibility.

You can try fixing the FF settings ni the core.ini but it'll still happen.
I don;t know if it's supposed to simulate a pothole or bump in a road or
what but it's not done very well if the wheel can be taken out of your hands
on the straight at Monza, I'd assume that's a bit flatter than Rouen!

Yeah, I noticed that for the first time last night. About 2 minutes after
clipping a wall it felt like I'd lost the rear suspension. Later it occured
to me that it might have been a flat. Is that modeled in GPL?
However, I get this wheel jerking sometimes right after pulling (easily) out
of the pits. If I can get it to happen tonight I'll save a reply file and
I'll post it to the binaries group.

What's odd is the *exact* same thing happens in F1 2000 and has happened
through several different combinations of hardware (including two completely
different systems) so I'm wondering if it's something simulated in the game
engines that's supposed to happen.

Happens to me but only when online....I think i need the glide fix

Are you overdriving your cpu? Perhaps overclocking
is scrambling system's inputs. I'd start looking for less obvious
solutions..i.e.
irq conflicts. Try REMOVING your soundcard. (first from your windows
enviroment via the device manager) then when it's un-installed, take the
card completely out.
Try putting a fairly big fan to blow into your cpu box. If heat buildup
is a problem, this might lessen it. Something is causing a conflict in your
system.
Go back to the device manager and make sure there are NO red X's or yellow
?'s infront of any of your components. Good luck.

Nope.

Nope. I'm running W2K Pro with ACPI HAL which shouldn't have IRQ issues.

Perhaps a last resort to try...

Heat is not a problem. CPU is 30C and MB is 28C.

I don't think so as this has followed me through three systems now. The
only constant is that each system had a SBLive but I think the happened with
GPL on my wife's PC which has a "classic" ISA SB16 card.

All is fine there, too.
Thanks for the suggestions though. It seems that this isn't an uncommon
problem. For now I've dialed down the FF a bit and will live with it.

OK, I've got a 4 sec. replay clip that shows the problem - posted to
alt.binaries.simulators.autos. Switch to the in-car camera and watch the
wheel.

I'm a bit puzzled that you got the problem before *and* after the change to your
new Logi. Elsewhere my statement would be the following:
Steering pot is worn out, or:
With the Logi there is spiking from improper adjusted Forces. Especially the
latency and the damping values have a significant influence on spiking.
For further info check out the thread about FF-settings, which is just running
here.
Hope this helps
